Overview of two high-capacity memory cards: microSDXC 128 Gb and SDXC 256 Gb

Hello Giktayms! Memory cards are needed by absolutely everyone, except perhaps the owners of smartphones and tablets with bitten apples. One of the world leaders in the production of memory cards is Kingston. And now the time has come to conquer new volumes of memory cards - SDXC 256 gigabytes and microSDXC 128 gigabytes. Under the cut - a story about new products.

Talking about the advantages of such cards is very simple: these are huge collections of films and music in Android tablets and smartphones and a huge number of hours of recording in DVRs and action cameras.
In addition, I note that a card of such a volume is simultaneously a way to lose all the material at once, for example, in the event of a quadrocopter falling into water.

The recording speed is extremely important for high-resolution cameras, and actually on this parameter and divide memory cards into classes. The experimental sample is declared as class 10 UHS-1, which means it must demonstrate a write speed of at least 10 MB / s. Of course, we should expect exceeding this threshold in reality, we will check in the tests.

And here is the nice truth, the card is really faster than the declared standard

Holders of SLR cameras are probably rubbing their hands, although frankly, 128 gigabytes was often enough even for long trips. If the photographer actively uses video recording, then in this case you need to think about the maximum amount of memory card. The card standard is declared as class 10 UHS-1, which means that it must demonstrate a write speed of at least 10 MB / s. It’s simply not supposed to write less FullHD video, but there is still high-speed shooting in the DSLR, and there the flow of information is much larger.

What can limit a person when working with such cards?

Actually the speed of the camera and the speed of data transfer to the computer through the card reader. To eliminate a potential bottleneck I will take the original Kingston device for reading and writing to memory cards, at the same time it will be possible to evaluate this device.

The device by the way is made very competently. Support for a bunch of memory card standards does not surprise anyone, but not every vendor puts a long USB cable in the kit.

A little annoying is the red Kingston logo, which actively blinks when operations with an inserted card, but the light is not very bright, and you can easily turn the reader over.

By the way, remember there was a post about the MobileLite Wireless Gen2 wireless card reader? So, the aforementioned memory cards kindly agreed to undergo the testing procedure in this device. In a warm and friendly atmosphere, all the information that was recorded on the SDXC 256 Gb and microSDXC 128 Gb was shared on the connected iPhone and tablet on the android. “The prank was a success” (C) Harry Potter.

Real-life testing was conducted for microSDXC in the Sony HDR-AS100V camera , and for SDXC in the Canon 6D SLR camera.

When shooting video on an action camera, no problems were noticed, the card coped with all the tasks and with a frame rate of 120 frames per second at a resolution of 720p and a frame rate of 240 at a resolution of 480p. But for shooting in XAVC-S format with a data transfer rate of 50 Mbps, you will need a faster card, for example,Kingston SDA3 , but it has half the capacity.

Burst shooting on the SDXC 256 Gb in the Canon 6D was a success. At a shooting speed of 4.5 frames per second, the card took over 28 frames in 15 seconds. This is not a record, Kingston has faster SDA3 cards - but their capacity is limited to 64 gigabytes.

Summing up, I’ll say - 10 years ago, cards with a capacity of 1024 times less were considered large, and the write speed of 4-5 MB / s of dreams, progress does not stand still, flash memory is constantly progressing, and of course, it is leading in this process Kingston company.
