Review of headphones Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi DJ MHP-839

    Hi Geektimes!

I continue to acquaint you with the gadgets of the American company Monoprice, the distributors of which are our company SOUND4YOU . Today I will introduce you to the closed-type Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi DJ MHP-839 headphones from the Pro series, which are designed for both professional DJs and music lovers. Headphones were highly appreciated by consumers in the US market for incredibly high-quality sound at a low price.

It seems that the developers set a goal to create headphones with a simple design and minimal equipment, where 80% of the cost will be the cost of sound.

In this review, I propose to do without a colorful introduction and immediately go on to a description of these headphones.

    Packaging:
Headphones Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi DJ MHP-839 comes in an ordinary cardboard box measuring 23x23x9 cm and a total weight of 470 g. To be honest, the quality of the box can be described as "there's nowhere simpler." But it often happens that a manufacturer intentionally makes a cheap box to reduce the cost of an advertising “wrapper” and provide the consumer with a quality product.

After opening the box, we find that the manufacturer did not report something. We see directly the headphones, two cables and an adapter and that's it. There is not even an instruction, the first time I meet this, although all the main parameters are indicated on the box.

There is also no cover, while the headphones are folding and it would be nice for the manufacturer to include the simplest fabric cover in the kit.

    Appearance and ergonomics:
Now, directly about the Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi DJ MHP-839 headphones themselves. Headphones of the usual size for on-ear, closed type, completely cover the ear. The case is made of black plastic with a matte surface, which is very practical. These are very lightweight headphones and weigh only 230 g.

Headphones are not felt on the head, as if they become part of your body, due to ergonomic parameters: folding cups with soft ear pads and shape memory of your ear. The cups can rotate in different planes, reducing pressure on the ears.

The ear pads and pillow on the headband are very soft and pleasant to the touch, made of durable high-quality eco-leather. By the way, even the most top-end headphones have long switched to artificial leather, as it is more practical in daily use. The cups are interchangeable and you can choose different colors.

The upper part of the headband is made of flexible rubber, which increases the comfort of shrinkage and durability. The headband is adjustable in height.

I was glad that the headphones fold easily, due to the rotary, even more correctly, 180 ° swivel cups. This incidentally is the chips of these headphones.

By the way, the ear pads are replaceable, so you can always change them, for example, to a different color. You can always familiarize yourself with our color and availability in our “SOUND4YOU” Mobile Sound Store.

    Sound:
Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi DJ MHP-839 headphones have 50 mm drivers. Below I will describe the technical parameters, and then my impressions of the sound.

    frequency range
The frequency range is perhaps the most meaningless parameter in the characteristic and is used more by marketers. A person hears in the range of 20Hz - 20kHz, at the beginning of this range are low-frequency sounds (bass), at the top - high-frequency sounds. The task of any headphones is to correctly reproduce this range, without failures, without wheezing and a bass rumble, without hissing and rattle on the treble. This ability reflects the amplitude-frequency characteristic (AFC) and is usually presented in the form of a graph of the dependence of volume on frequency. Therefore, the smoother and smoother the curve, the more accurate and clear the sound. Unfortunately, I could not find the frequency response graph from the manufacturer, but the range of 20Hz - 20kHz is indicated on the headphone box.

    Sensitivity (sound pressure)
Sensitivity is the efficiency of the headphones: the larger it is, the louder the headphones sound, regardless of the source. Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi DJ is very loud, the manufacturer indicates 100 ± 3 dB, which corresponds to the fact of measurement using the VUMeter program, which can be found on the Apple Store or Google Market ...

    Load resistance (impedance)
For Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi DJ manufacturer set the resistance to 40 ohms. If you do not go into radio technology, then we can say the following: the greater the resistance, the more powerful the source is for headphones and the less the influence of the source itself on the sound. In other words, the headphones will work perfectly both with players and with more powerful sources, for example, DJ turntables.

As you might have guessed from the review, I delayed for a long time to share my opinion on the sound. In fact, because it is difficult to describe the sound of such inexpensive headphones that sound like expensive. To write honestly and only good is to create doubts among readers. But I still try. Headphones are uniquely loud. The developers have focused on low frequencies, which is not surprising. The sound is very bright and juicy. The low frequency range is very much boosted, but it does not clog either medium or high. At the same time, by the standards of the class, one can even talk about such things as control and detail. The bass is deep and very captivating with its softness. Low frequencies sound very nice, there is always a desire to shake your head to the beat of the music!

Midrange is the weakest side of low-cost headphones, as a rule. But Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi DJ was pleasantly surprised here. The sounds sound deep and natural, which you can’t expect from headphones for such a price. Although sometimes the middle frequencies sound somewhat detached, especially against the background of rhythmic bass and bright high frequencies.

Honestly, even such a result can be considered outstanding within the price range.

In general, the sound quality of these headphones is at their best, however, like with other models of the Monopraise line, this tradition has gone from the first legendary Monopraise 8320 headphones , according to which I will definitely make a separate and great review with all their pros and cons. Subscribe to our blog - all the most interesting is yet to come.

    Connection:
A big plus of the headphones is that the cable is replaceable. Two cables are included: one regular standard length 1.25 m, the other studio, thick and long 3.5 m. All plugs are 3.5 mm thick and have a gold-plated anti-corrosion coating. The kit has an adapter 3.5-6.3 mm.

The cords and adapter are of excellent quality, which is not surprising, since Monoprice started in the market and to this day remains the leader in the market of adapters, adapters and cords for professional musicians.

    Price and warranty period:
You can always find out on availability and buy Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi DJ MHP-839 headphones on our website »Mobile Sound Store“ SOUND4YOU ”
For all Monoprice models, we provide a 12-month manufacturer's warranty.

In this review, I also want to add that in the Monoprice line there are Monoprice Hi-Fi Light Weight headphones, model MHP-865 (lite version) , you can say this is a younger brother, they differ in a little design, they have softer ear pads and a standard impedance of 32 Ohms , both of these parameters tell us that they are more “folk”, they also have a fixed cable, but the cups also turn around 180 ° C like in the DJ Pro series.

    Conclusions:
If you are a fan of good high-quality sound, but you are not ready to overpay for the work of marketers of top-end headphones, then Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi DJ MHP-839 is your option.

The only negative that I can highlight is a rather austere, simple design. Although this indicator can be a plus for many: no bright inserts, chrome parts, etc.

Great powerful bass sound paired with good ergonomics are great for everyday use. Headphones are suitable for work in recording studios, as well as for amateur listening to music.
