What happens if you compose a password for OS X from emoticons?
An inquisitive user, Artiom Dashisnky, wondered : is it possible to use emojis in a password for OS X Yosemie?
It turned out - it is possible.
After that, Artyom had another problem. It turned out that on the authorization screen there are only native keyboards - and no emojis. How to enter your password? With this question, the user turned to the StackExchange programming audience.
The boot disk is fully encrypted with FileVault.
Artyom sees three options here, but does not know how to implement any of them:
1. Find a way to enter emoji in the password field.
2. In some way, connect to another computer and enter the password from it.
3. Find a way to recover your password despite using FileVault.
What to do in such a situation?
The correct answer is from Tom Gewecke
In the upper right corner of the screen there is the option “Other Input Sources” , there you need to select Unicode Hex Input . With its help, you enter an emoji or any other character, you only need to know its code. You can find it in Character Viewer or find it on the Internet. For example, an airplane U + 2708 ✈.
To enter a character from the Unicode Hex Input keyboard, you must type a four-digit code with the Option key held down .
If a symbol corresponds to a five-digit code like U + 1F600, then you have to find two four-digit surrogates: we look in the sameCharacter Viewer or on the Internet on sites like fileformat.info . For example, code 1F600 corresponds to surrogates D83D and DE00. In this case, while holding down the Option key, type D83DDE00.
And never again try crazy things on the admin account.
Although essentially speaking, Apple could have prevented this little nightmare by banning emojis in passwords. On the other hand, it’s very fun to get a password from emoticons. And remembering is simple.
Provide such a password from the standard Unicode characters.
The picture immediately appears as a beloved horse running away from a radiation explosion in the Soviet Chernobyl in the rain. How do you forget this? That is, such a password is easy to remember forever, while it has a very high entropy.
From the point of view of information security, probably the password from emoticons can even be called the recommended practice for ordinary people. Entropy will be clearly higher than in the standard passwords that they use (123456, password123 and the like).
Despite the high entropy, entering such passwords with the Option key held down is still very inconvenient. While you enter your three emoticons, typing the code with one finger, the other person has long entered a 40-character password phrase in ASCII.
It turned out - it is possible.
