3CX v15.5 Update 3 Release with New Features and Important Changes

The other day we released 3CX v15.5 Update 3 and at the same time introduced new licenses - 3CX Standard from 4 to 16 simultaneous calls (tentatively, organization of up to 50 employees). These licenses are issued absolutely free to all users of the former free 3CX edition called PBX Edition.

The new free Standard license offers an unlimited number of SIP trunks (external lines) and extension numbers (users), 25 simultaneous participants in a web conference and free hosting on Google Cloud! All current PBX Edition licenses (with an active subscription to updates, i.e. not expired) will be automatically converted to Standard annual licenses, 16 simultaneous calls.

Number of simultaneous participants3CX WebMeeting web conferencing systems have also been expanded: up to 25 participants in Standard, up to 100 participants in PRO, up to 250 in Enterprise.

We are again starting to officially support Grandstream phones (so far in Beta status): GXP16XX , GXP17XX and GXP21XX . The following functions are implemented:

  • Auto-configuration in the local network, through the SBC utility and through the RPS server (PnP and manual configuration)
  • Let's Encrypt Certificates
  • UaCSTA protocol supported
  • Automatic dialing from the application (CTI technology)
  • 3CX Certified Firmware Updates

We talked about other update features in the last Update 3 Beta review , but let’s repeat it again:

All new features of 3CX v15.5 Update 3 are presented in the video “ New in Update 3 ”.

Update to v15.5 Update 3

Before upgrading or reinstalling 3CX, pay attention to the following points:

  • Set a static IP address on the 3CX server interface
  • Install all available Windows updates.
  • Temporarily disable the antivirus, or exclude directories from scanning:

If you use 3CX v15.5, 15.5 SP1, 15.5 SP2 or 15.5 SP3 BETA, go to the Updates section of the 3CX management interface and click on Release update 15.5 SP3 to install.

If you want to install a new system, 3CX versions for Linux and Windows are available:

Answers on questions

I'm having difficulty downloading updates

  1. Go to the section Parameters - All parameters and find the parameter DOWNLOADS_URL
  2. Replace its value with https://downloads-global.3cx.com/downloads/v155 and click OK
  3. In the management interface, go to the Updates section and update the system

What does “support” for Grandstream phones mean?

Support means that in addition to basic SIP communications, 3CX supports advanced device management:

  • The BLF-GXP1610 / 15/20/25 indicators do not have them, on the rest they are centrally configured from the 3CX interface.
  • Voice Codec Priority Management - Centrally from 3CX
  • Language on the phone display - centrally set in the 3CX interface
  • Time zone, date and time format - centrally from 3CX interface
  • Password to access the phone’s web interface - centrally generated and set on the phone - excellent security guaranteed!
  • Default call transfer method (followed, unaccompanied) - centrally set in the 3CX interface
  • Call melody - centrally set in 3CX interface
  • Power LED behavior, display backlight, screensaver timeout - centrally set in 3CX interface
  • LLDP support and VLAN configuration - centrally exposed in 3CX interface
  • Your company logo on the phone display is centrally loaded, but only in the GXP17XX and GXP21XX series.
  • Supports UDP / TCP / TLS signaling and SRTP voice encryption

Will Grandstream voice gateways (FXO, FXS) be officially supported?

Perhaps in the future, however, this depends not only on 3CX, but also on the representatives of Grandstream. It’s not possible to promise anything at the moment.

What does TLS out of the box mean?

This means that when using FQDN from 3CX, a security certificate will already be installed in the system. You just need to manually configure the phones for SIP communications over TLS. However, if you are ready to wait for Update 4, automatic work on TLS will already be implemented in the auto-configuration templates for IP phones (at the moment, we are waiting for the firmware of the phone vendors to be ready).

What are the important limitations of the Standard version?

The FQDN of the 3CX server name in the Standard version is issued only by 3CX, i.e. own domains are not allowed. However, if at the time of the upgrade to Update 3 the user was already using his own FQDN, he will continue to use it. But as soon as the user "unties" this FQDN from his license key, in the future he will be able to use only the FQDN from 3CX.

SMTP server for sending e-mail notifications only from 3CX. However, if the user was already using their own SMTP at the time of the upgrade to Update 3, they will continue to use it. But as soon as the user changes his SMTP to SMTP 3CX, he will receive a corresponding warning, and then he will not be able to return back.

Therefore, if you need maximum flexibility and independence, use the Pro edition.

What to do to partners who earned on hosting copies of 3CX?

The main recommendation for partners who want to sell their hosting for 3CX and their domain name, i.e. to offer a kind of “branding” - to focus on the proposal of Pro (or Enterprise), as the most flexible and functional edition. And for future sales of the annual subscription for Standard licenses ( versions for 8 and 16 calls are free only for the first year ), offer a special link to download 3CX , indicating your partner ID in it. In this case, a free license is immediately assigned to the partner, and points are awarded to him!

What will happen to my current Standard commercial license?

Absolutely nothing, all conditions will remain the same. In addition to the FQDN and SMTP server (and only if you decide to change these services to services from 3CX, as mentioned above).

What happens to unpaid annual licenses?

Annual licenses of any edition and capacity now do not "end". In the first 30 days after the expiration of such a license, the 3CX marketing department and (we hope so!) 3CX partner will notify the user of the need for renewal. If the renewal does not occur, on the 31st day any annual license automatically turns into a standard annual license for 4 simultaneous calls. The license expiration date is set on 12/31/2018.

How exactly are current free licenses replaced?

If your subscription to updates is still active (it is active for free licenses the first year after the activation of the key), your PBX Edition license will "turn" into a 16 Standard annual license. At the same time, the subscription end date will not change. After the end of the subscription (and in case of non-payment), the license will "turn" into the annual Standard 4 one. call and continue to be free.

If your subscription to updates has already expired, your PBX Edition license will "turn" into the annual Standard 4 one. call and continue to be free. The subscription end date is set on 12/31/2018.

Example: comparison of the old free and the new free edition 3CX

“Old” free license (8SC PBX Edition).
After activating the license key, you received 8 simultaneous calls, 1 SIP trunk and 1 year subscription to updates. If you did not renew your subscription after a year (95 euros), you still had the same 8 calls, but disconnected FQDN, SMTP and WebMeeting from 3CX.

"New" free license (16SC Standard).
After activating the license key, you get 16 simultaneous calls without restrictions on SIP trunks ( and other restrictions, except for the capabilities of the Pro edition ). If you do not renew your subscription to updates, the system will “decrease” to 4 simultaneous calls, but remain free, including FQDN, SMTP and WebMeeting for 25 participants from 3CX.
