7 questions you will be asked at an interview for a UX designer job

Getting a job is always difficult. It is impossible to know in advance the answers to all the questions that the employer will ask you. However, there are a few general questions that you can prepare for. Successful answers to these questions do not guarantee you a job, but they will increase your chances of success. Remember that your answer should be adjusted in accordance with the description of the vacancy and the activities of the company.

In this article, I will provide seven key questions at a UX interview, as well as suggest how to best answer them.

1. What is UX design? Why is it needed? How do you explain the UX design process?

Here they try to find out if you have basic knowledge of UX design.

Even if this question is quite general, it needs to be answered specifically. Focus on determining who you are as a designer. Your answer should be clear and accessible. Imagine explaining this to a 10 year old child.

2. What is your design process? Describe the methods you use.

Also, in your story, cover the following topics in the context of your projects:

  • User Analysis : What methods did you use? Why exactly these methods?
  • Character (User Personas) : How did you create the characters? How many characters have you created? How did this help you?
  • Customer Journey Map  and  User Flows : What does your map include?

  • Metrics and analytics : Explain using quantitative data the increase in the number of registrations, sales, or other changes resulting from your design decisions.

3. How do you work with other designers, programmers, project managers?

Here they try to find out if you fit into the culture of the company.

Your interviewer wants to understand your work style. Design is a team sport and, as a UX designer, you need to know how to communicate your decisions effectively to the whole team.

Keep in mind that each team member probably sees this project from their point of view. However, you need to be able to communicate with all of them in order to quickly prevent any problems or misunderstandings.

The ability to empathize and understand the motivations of colleagues is an important quality. Developers, product managers and designers have different goals and objectives. If you demonstrate that you are listening to them, then you will be well received:

  • Developers - For effective collaboration with developers, try to understand the workflow and get a good idea of ​​the limitations and opportunities.
  • Product Managers - To work well with product managers, be sure to convert the prototypes into a detailed description, usually in the form of detailed stories.

4. How do you decide which features to add to your product?

If you are asking a question in the context of an existing product, you should focus on the basic principles of the product strategy  ( product strategy ). Before moving on to specific functions, you will need to get a clear picture of your business goals and user needs. You should be prepared to answer the following questions:

  • Who is your user?
  • What are the goals of users?
  • Why does the user need this feature? What problem does it solve?

Tip: A great opportunity to show how you will use user research to test solutions. Often with an unsolvable problem, collecting a lot of user data can help move forward. After a sufficient amount of data has been collected and the user's goals have been verified, you will be able to determine which new features are best suited to business goals.

5. Tell us about the project that you are most proud of.

Here they try to find out your strengths and weaknesses.

This is a tricky question. Answering him, candidates usually feel calm. However, then the interviewer asks additional questions about the process, thinking, interaction with other team members. The question allows you to evaluate the skills of the candidate without asking about it directly. Therefore, it is best to respond truthfully and clearly. Do not exaggerate your contribution to the project.

Tip: Please note that the question does not contain the word “UX”. Therefore, do not be afraid to talk about projects in other areas.

6. Tell us about a UX project that did not go as planned.

Here they try to find out if you can critically evaluate the work.

In no case do not pretend that you have never had such projects. Making mistakes is a normal part of working life. It’s important to show how you dealt with them. We need to find an honest example that will show:

  • Something went wrong
  • Why did it go wrong
  • What did you do to solve the problem
  • What did you learn

Tip: It is important to acknowledge the error and then present an effective solution to the problem. We all learn from mistakes.

7. What, in your opinion, is the future of UX design?

Here they try to find out if you think ahead.
