Report on attending YouTube conference in Kiev or Why video content has become a part of life

I was just recently at the YouTube conference in Kiev, under the cut my story about the event.

    General impressions

The first one. YouTube and Google, too, very well use all the modern achievements and research in the field of social philosophy, social psychology and sociology, and even know such words as “narrative”. Indeed, in order to somehow cope with such a huge society (1 billion a month on YouTube), social philosophy cannot be done (hello to philosophers). So “Big Google, watching you, bro!” A

slide from the screen with the fact that you look at YouTube most of all is education, alas - only 8%

As one speaking man, the chief on YouTube in Europe, said: the whole YouTube is about what is ordinary - can be (shown) unusual - and yes, I agree, YouTube - by its philosophy it is about this: extraordinary from ordinary. He said that the first video uploaded to YouTube was about elephants, which Google engineer uploaded for the test (although I already hear the second version - which video on YouTube was the first). And the first video uploaded in Ukraine was also about an elephant in the Kiev zoo - “there is something in these elephants”.

I think everyone understands that before, when there was poor traffic, the Internet spoke in text, because you can’t watch a lot of video on a 56k modem, but now that the channels have become better and more reliable, then the video started to develop. Why? Firstly, because it is a huge time saver, if I need to repair, for example, a washing machine, what will I look first? - video of course, and only then I will go to watch articles. That's why the video is developing - because of its better visualization - this is the most important factor, and as a good way to save time.

Texts - switched to video, so video content will only grow. Just as before the data was only on hardware, now the same data has gone to the clouds - why? because it’s so accessible everywhere, it’s much more flexible in management and takes care of the physical medium, and the safety of the video is already the concern of the provider.

Google has already had an office in Ukraine, Kiev for 10 years. It is headed by Dmitry Sholomko, went out, said that Google had Ukraine, and specifically, in terms of YouTube - very big plans. Therefore, they organized such an event. For what? In order to develop those authors from Ukraine who bring youtube content a lot of dough (which is understandable) and so that those who are not very big understand how to develop their channels, how to create, correctly promote and sell their content.

The television begins to slowly understand what they want or not - they still have to change, and it’s better to be in these changes to participate in the process. This slide is a great illustration that in case of TV + YouTube everyone will win.

A few numbers: 1 billion unique users visit YouTube every month - this is about a third of the entire Internet community in the world (yes, not all people in the world have Internet).

Every day, about 400 hours of video are loaded on YouTube. So that you understand this in the equivalent of life - somewhere around 46,000 years of life.

Many of my friends listen to music on Vkontakte, and I listen on YouTube, for sure, so I correctly thought that music for YouTube is our everything.

80% - YouTube - not from the United States, but from other countries, including from countries developing in the YouTube segment, Ukraine is included here - YouTube in Ukraine is growing at 70% per year. Those. in Ukraine, YouTube is growing faster than it is growing on a global scale - 83% of Internet users in Ukraine - go to YouTube.

In YouTube, 108,000 creators of video content (as Google’s representatives called them).

Introduced a single center for authors. Previously, they had support only for the elite, i.e. those authors who brought a lot of youtube dough, now you don’t have to be a scribbled author, so that tech support treats you like a white man :) But cool authors are offered additional buns: the ability to use YouTube studios in Europe, all kinds of closed events for their own, etc. .d.

80% authors youtube - a rogueauthors with the number of subscribers from 1000 to 10000. If you have 100 000 subscribers, then a permanent manager will be assigned to you who will guide you, tell you what and how to do, what to pay attention to, etc. On the screen you can see that from Ukraine there is an author EeOneGuy, who has more than 8 million subscribers - God! How could this be possible ?!

They said that in a couple of weeks they will launch another closed community for authors, so that the authors communicate with each other. As I understood the announced goal of this community, it was brought in so that the authors help each other, so that there is a space where people united by one goal can talk and mutually enrich each other - I think this is cool. Of course, there is a certain trick here, instead of supporting millions of requests, people can help each other, the normal approach is not only to offload tech support, but also to develop the community, as for me it’s quite a good solution, if only it works, and not was a stillborn project. There is hope that technical support on YouTube will be brought to mind, otherwise when you write in support of YouTube, it seems that you are writing Solaris on demand ...

There was an interesting lecture on formats

    Format 360
Yes, they launched it, yes, they promised to finish it.
In their opinion, it is most suitable for immersion in the atmosphere of the event, in the context of the event, where the user can look at something from that angle that he will choose, and not just the one that the operator chose. There is a combination of video and the actions of the viewer. Most importantly, the viewer can turn his head inside.

Where the youtubers themselves recommend using this:
    - music (clips)
    - extreme video (when someone flies somewhere, (not you :), you can admire the views of the shroud)

360 Live - they will soon be able to do live broadcasts in 360 mode .

And in this regard, I must say that YouTube decided to catch up with Periscope, and now it will be possible to make streams directly from the mobile to your YouTube channel. Previously, it was terribly confused - all sorts of (unneeded) hangouts that shared either YouTube or Google + many times, now all this will only be on the YouTube side.

During the streams from the mobile, you can see someone commented on and immediately respond promptly if necessary, in one word they promise a complete immersion in the stream - to catch up and overtake Periscope, as I understand it.

    Any troubles with copyright

There was a report about such an important issue for YouTube - as copyright, and how to work with it.

    What's new:
    - now the strikes are not cumulative (yohu !, finally) and now if you made a mistake somewhere or there was a conflict of rights, then this stigma does not remain on your channel. They said, they used to chop it off their shoulders so that it would be noticeable to the author that he, the beast , violates copyrights! - I had strikes on my personal channel, and I have to say this is soooooooo how tangible and noticeable, and thank God that it somehow began to decide more humanly on YouTube.
    - removed the concept of the channel’s bad reputation
    - the strike will now be not six months, but 90 days (!).
    - now if someone rolled a strike into your video for you, it will continue to monetize, but after clarification of the relationship with the copyright holder, all the loot is transferred to the one who won the lawsuit - very wisely. In general, YouTube does not want to get involved in these lawsuits between the copyright holders and the creators of the video, and he says - figure it out, guys, if you don’t figure it out, then we ban everyone and everything.
    - there will be a new panel and a new policy regarding copyright violations. Where the panel itself will tell you what and how best to do with its controversial vidos.

There will be many changes on info cards, all kinds of tips, annotations of vidos, etc.

NB: I didn’t know that the tips were visible on the mobile, and the rest of the info cards were not visible, like they said so.

By importance, the metadata in the vidos is divided by such a descending rating:
    - name of the vidos
    - description
    - subtitles (you can allow viewers to add subtitles).
    - annotations
    - hints
    - tags (it’s not even necessary to translate them, as the robot translates them himself).

They also said that localization is very important. Since, for example, a person wants to watch a video, but does not know the language, if there are credits, he will look and bring foreign traffic to your channel.

It’s always better to do subtitles, although this will be a video about embroidery or about Barbie, because if there are captions, then even if there is a person in another country who is interested in embroidery, then he will be able to watch your video and you will get traffic. Because the robot itself, even if there are 2 similar videos, but one has subtitles, it will select the video that has the captions.

You can order captions on the YouTube exchange exchange, but people at the conference said it was expensive.

Example of a copyright case, if there is a clip = song + video, 1 clip can have 2 copyright holders - someone has music, someone has a video, but they must agree, and choose the right policies when using the same video, otherwise there will be a conflict of rights.

The most important thing about YouTube’s rights is what the representative of YouTube said: fair use is not a panacea, it may not always work.

For programmers: they said that the YouTube API will get better. I did not go into details, since I am not a programmer, but I remembered that the buttons for subscribing to channels for sites will be implemented, in my opinion a good innovation, since on YouTube currency is subscribers, and therefore, the more opportunities there are to gain subscribers - it's better.

    YouTube analytics

There was an interesting report by such a funny girl who all the time tried to stir up the audience (which, as it seemed to her, did not react: - although it was so interesting that everyone rushed to record) - with exclamations: “I can’t hear you!”, Etc. from the repertoire of pop singers :) But the report was interesting.

She talked about how to read YouTube analytics correctly. The speaker gave a lot of information, below in bulk, my abstracts are summarized from the report:

(In general, such events are useful, since it’s one thing to read the tedious help from YouTube, and it’s not always possible to understand how this works in practice, but it’s also presented here help, only on the practical side, with examples of interconnections that affect what on YouTube).

    - I already wrote that the main lafhack is that you always need to look at statistics not in 28 days, but in the last 90 days - it is more adequate in the picture.

    - the most important thing is that the author of YouTube has the largest traffic from the YouTube main page - this means that your page (i.e. the channel) is interesting for people themselves and they find what to see there

    - it is important to analyze the analytics and demographics of subscribers - etc. e. these are your most important viewers, they need to be interesting. Explore their demographics, geography and, accordingly, conduct a content strategy.

    - Subscribers most often come from similar / popular videos. At the same time, even if these similar videos are yours - this is not good, because there may be someone else's videos in the recommended ones on the right - and the viewers will dump from your channel and forget about you.

    - the percentage of views is very important (Percentage of video viewing (quartile of video)
Percentage of video viewing: 25% - number of views of the fourth part of the video.
Percentage of video viewing: 50% - number of views of half the video.
Percentage of video viewing: 75% - number of views of three quarters . video
video played to: 100% - the number of views the video to the end).

authors should strive to make it even be not less than 50%

    - audience retention, if you can see, using the example that was analyzed during the report that in the first 15 seconds the audience goes to similar vidos - this is the first thing that the audience sees in the video is not very interesting. Therefore, there is the main difference: on TV - we can’t look at what will be there in the end, but in the video on YouTube we can. Therefore, you should not be afraid to show the result at the beginning of the video: you will learn how to hammer nails like this, or cook such (show) borscht, that is, it is important that the person immediately sees the result, so that the viewer immediately has an answer to the question - why should he spend his life and watch this video?

    - the vidos rating depends on the audience retention

    - if the audience leaves - we compare the same videos and draw conclusions that they have better?

    - when we go to our channel, we have 2 shelves of vidos: to which we are subscribed and to which we are not subscribed (what YouTube offers you based on your views) - and here to get into this second section on the main pages of potential subscribers - you need the video rating to be good, this is likes + audience retention.

    - it’s up to the rating whether your video will get into the push notification (and also on phones) for all your subscribers, if the video is not rated - YouTube will not send notifications to your subscribers that the video has appeared, go in, look.

    - the statistics will tell when to release the vidos, but morning-evening orientation is a conditional thing, we have morning, and somewhere in the USA - evening, so this is not always a panacea

    - you need to strive to ensure that at least a third of the statistics are from subscribers

    - the audience retention should not be watched by the channel, but by each video separately, since the channel gives an average figure. The author must clearly understand: why in this video the audience did not fall, but fell in this.

    - always think, analyze and answer the question: why was there a surge in views? why decline? what happened at this time? what is the reason?

    - I discovered an awesome thing - “Google Trends” - you can find out a lot of interesting things, including why there was a surge in views. A common example: a lad removed magic tricks, downloaded and forgot, and then he comes in - and there are 4 million views. This means that during this time some top blogger filmed a video about magic tricks, or something happened (for example, Coperfield arrived or some other magic trick), and this video was already “similar” - and the channel started to receive views.

    - according to Google trends, you can track why something is happening with your video and adjust your videos. For example, the query “fitness” drops to zero in December (the New Year, everyone eats - what kind of fitness?), And then takes off to heaven in February - everyone after the holidays went to get fat.

    - you need to understand the difference between the presentation of text and video. For example, vidos about recipes are best called as “a recipe for something there” - it’s like text and “how to cook something there”. Since if a person goes to Google, he will score a “recipe”, and if he goes to YouTube, he will score a “how to cook”, and if your video has all this, then in Google it’s as if he didn’t ask for your search video with the recipe will drop out already in the search.

    General thoughts

YouTube has long been such a mass media that combines television, media, and a national newspaper. Who would have imagined that the connection: DVR + YouTube - significantly reduced the degree of arrogance of road inspectors?

Now any phone is a camera, any phone is a tool for documenting and confirming any facts. But YouTube has become such a popular media, all kinds of popular news aggregators (like Reedus) are still not that way, since they are very dependent on the taste of the editors who issue it, and in this case, everything is shown as it is, without editorial editing. And if you think more broadly, it’s precisely these combinations - YouTube + phone - now I think this is the most important tool for upholding the libertarian values of an open society.

The conference even had a title discussion between the representatives of the media (TV) and the authors of YouTube, where these guys from the TV told the guys in YouTube how they can help each other, because in the case of cooperation, TV gets a lot of free journalists that can be everywhere and always (and full-time TV journalists can’t always and everywhere), and the authors get publicity and fame for themselves and their channels.

But in general, of course, the sea was very valuable information. More often, YouTube would organize such events, or micro-events, so that you could easily assimilate all this and not at a gallop in Europe, then the authors would develop better. In my opinion, a more detailed story (with cases) about how to use YouTube for a niche business, and not only in IT, and more broadly - how to use YouTube as a good marketing tool, would be very much in demand.

The report was sponsored by SIM-Networks, buying and selling servers, VPS, hosting and clouds in European data centers (thanks for letting us go to the conference :).
