How career ladders and elevators in the IT industry have changed over the past week
Paying attention to how quickly changes in the career of IT specialists can occur, a self-critical observer will ask himself the question: maybe I missed something? Departments, divisions, and even entire companies can cease to exist in just one week. In one week, a specialist can get an offer that will allow him to step over two steps of the career ladder at once, and an unknown student can earn the respect of world industry leaders and gain access to a career elevator by winning a prestigious competition.
Some people constantly go up the career ladders of a house called the IT industry (even at night) - just listen. And you can get together on the staircase and carefully monitor the trajectories of the movements of these subjects, to study the nature of the movements. And then it turns out that each of these trajectories has its own reference point and coordinate system, which one often wants to correlate with the general measurement scale.
Management of the company Nokia has decided to focus in making personnel decisions on universal measure - money. By 2018, the company intends to reduce costs by 900 million euros. In the near future, management plans to lay off more than 1,000 employees in Finland. Nokia announced the upcoming reduction of 1,032 people. If the company fired 1,024 employees, this would have killed two birds with one stone: preserve the work of several employees and make this event landmark, at the subconscious level, causing a more calm reaction in the IT community to the departure of 2 ^ 10 employees.
The cutback could not go unnoticed amid recent news that Microsoft was selling Foxconn's Nokia mobile phone division for $ 350 million.
If, purely hypothetically, the dismissed specialists applied to the Skillaz recruiting agency, they would have been helped to find a new job, and the agency would have been fairly enriched. True, their new employers would be in Russia: the recruiting agency is something Russian. But another option is possible - Skillaz could “freeze”, unable to cope with the influx of applicants.
But since neither this, nor the other is threatened by this online service, they decided to strengthen in the field of sales and hired Joseph Panasyuk, the former director for development of the Webinar.ru webinar hosting service.
At Skillaz, as sales director, he will build a base of paying customers in Russia. “Skillaz attracted me with a strong product team, market development potential, and, most importantly, a real opportunity to change traditional hiring with the help of new approaches. We see that now over $ 200 million a year is spent on selection online, and we are ready to fight for these figures, ” Panasyuk told Firrma.
If all of the same long-suffering Nokia employees become depressed and go “look for themselves” to India, then at the same time they will be able to undergo training in the accelerator on the design and development of applications for iOS. Apple itself announced the opening of the first accelerator center in Indian Bangalore. The company is going to support local startups and members of the iOS developer community.
Apple will “inspire and instruct developers in best practices, help them develop their skills and transform the design, quality and performance of their iOS apps.”
Apple calls Bangalore "the home of the local startup industry." In this accelerator, Apple employees will conduct weekly briefings, as well as evaluate applications of local developers. The center will also advise on the use of the Swift programming language.
“India is the birthplace of one of the most resonant and entrepreneurial iOS development communities in the world. Opening this new facility in Bangalore, we give developers access to tools that will help create innovative applications for customers around the world, ”said Apple CEO Tim Cook.
True, thirsty for knowledge will have to wait, since Apple intends to open the accelerator only in 2017.
However, in the IT industry there are those who were able to wait for the beginning, but are not ready to wait for the end of training - they are able to declare themselves loudly now.
The St. Petersburg State University team from St. Petersburg became the winner of the ACM ICPC 2016 international student programming competition, the final of which was held in Phuket.
Gold medals were given to teams that took first four places. In addition to St. Petersburg State University and Shanghai University, participants from Harvard (3rd place) and the Russian MIPT (4th place) received the highest awards.
The general list of the first 12 places for which medals are awarded includes five Russian teams. Ural Federal University was located immediately after ITMO and took 8th place (both teams received silver medals), Nizhny Novgorod State University received 10th place and a bronze medal.
In the final, participants were asked to solve 11 problems in 5 hours with the help of one computer. “The tasks of the championship consist of a legend (a description of a certain fictitious situation), examples of tests and formal restrictions. To find a solution, the team needs to “translate” the problem into the language of mathematics; then the participants develop a solution algorithm and write the code, ”they say in ITMO.
Winners received invitations to internships at IBM research offices (sponsored the competition) and other international IT companies.
What future awaits these outstanding sportsmen-programmers, the thoughtful reader of "Habr" easily predicts. But what about other students - mere mortals? Looking at how fast the IT industry is developing, one can even raise the question a bit: will today's students be needed tomorrow at the positions of various IT specialists?
On May 20, Alyona Vladimirskaya, founder of the recruiting agencies Talanting and PRUFFI, delivered a lecture at Innopolis University. Her companies are engaged in examining the labor market of the IT industry, maintaining a database of the best specialists and young talents, provide consulting services and search for stars for large companies.
Ms. Vladimirskaya is sure that technology will radically change the labor market in the coming years. Rusbase shared the main points of her lecture:

Attention, attention: Nokia is declining

But instead, Nokia tried not to publicize the story, reporting the news only in Finnish. Moreover, these layoffs are part of Nokia’s global staff reduction of around 15,000 due to the merger with Alcatel-Lucent.
The cutback could not go unnoticed amid recent news that Microsoft was selling Foxconn's Nokia mobile phone division for $ 350 million.
The fight for numbers

I'll go to the developers - let them teach me

From the spot - into a career

Fortune telling on a binary heap

Ms. Vladimirskaya is sure that technology will radically change the labor market in the coming years. Rusbase shared the main points of her lecture:
1. Robotics. Automation and the abolition of many service specialties.
2. Agro. The whole world is invested in modern food. In this sector, we can become leaders.

12. Consulting. The personal consultation segment will grow.
13. Games. There are not enough e-sports managers, screenwriters, programmers and developers of new types of entertainment for virtual reality.
