How to describe your skills in a resume

    The skills that you want to tell your employers about should be clearly articulated, and not just be thrown into the wind. Sociability / responsibility and creativity - all this, of course, is beautiful, but meaningless is useless.

    And we also know the answer to the question of how to create a humane resume.

    So, let’s go through the skills that you forget to mention all the time.

    Important!
    Just remind you that the skills that you tell your employer should be directly related to the position you are applying for. Conciseness and specificity are the first rule of a resume.

    // Leadership

    Of course, this is an important skill for everyone who is associated with managing the company or even teamwork - sooner or later, each member of her will be faced with the need to take the initiative. So, if you know what can be a leader in a team at some point, then you can always mention this quality (and even need it!).

    We write:
    know how to solve conflicts in a team, are ready to help colleagues, listen to criticism, are ready to lead, take responsibility for team decisions ... - it all sounds more specific than “I have leadership qualities”.

    // Sociability

    This leadership skill is directly related to leadership. The fact is that you need to not only be able to communicate with people, but also understand that there must be a factor of business relations and mutual benefits between you. When you write “outgoing”, you don’t need to think that you have great friends and are good friends with colleagues.

    We write:
    networking, knowledge of the technique of “cold” calls, building relationships with customers, ability to work in a team.

    Important!
    It’s good (great, great, you don’t have a price) if every skill that you mention will be supported in the resume by an example that proves that you have one. For example, compare the “communicative” Ivan or Ivan, who organizes events and attracted famous speakers using his ability to communicate and search for contacts.

    // Organization

    Firstly, in Russian, “organization” can have two related meanings: you are organized, punctual, understand what a “systemic” approach is, and maybe you understand how to organize a lot of people and make gears spin. So in this case, we would advise you:

    We write:
    event organization, meeting control, scheduling, planning (great word for a resume!), time management

    // Responsibility

    This is mentioned only by people who just want to tell the employer "I can be trusted!" But there are much more correct ways to prove that you are a responsible employee, for example, mentioning that you were engaged in project activities or that you were involved in serious financial calculations - everything that had a specific result will be useful to mark instead of “responsible”.

    We write:
    project activities (completed n. projects), work with client n., creation of an advertising company n.

    // Learning

    We are all trained. Otherwise, they could not talk, write, eat, walk. This is a normal skill not only for humans, but also for animals. Another superfluous and too “general” word for your resume.

    We write:
    I independently studied program n., mastered the programming language n., actively attending trainings, creating a personal website, the desire to use skills in different departments

    // Critical thinking

    You know that today everyone is a movie critic. But what’s really - when you need to show the skills of a real analyst, to say something after the presentation, everyone suddenly loses their thoughts.

    We write:
    information search, ability to analyze n. in n., reporting in n., peer review

    // Stress resistance

    This is an indispensable, wonderful and very necessary skill. But not a skill in fact - it is a character trait, as well as sociability, for example. You can learn to deal with stress, but most likely, applying this characteristic to yourself, you want to say that you can work under pressure, in deadlines and at a fast pace. So tell me about it!

    We write:
    the ability (EXPERIENCE!) to work in deadline mode, the ability to quickly make decisions, market knowledge, understanding of the characteristics of competition in the industry, the ability to cope with crisis situations

    // Language skills

    Fluency in languages is not an abstract concept, but a very, very concrete one.

    We write:
    I speak English at level C1, I speak Spanish fluently, knowledge of Chinese - A1

    // Computer skills

    So, you really decided to share with your employer that you know how to use a computer. We have already said a hundred times that “confident knowledge of office equipment” is not an argument at all. MFP too!

    We write:
    typewriting (?), speed printing, knowledge of function n. MS Excel, the ability to create infographics in n., The ability to create a banner for social networks in n.
