Dunning-Krueger effect
Having opened the Habr today in the morning, I found an article there in the Human Resources hub, “Do you have a lot of money? Then we go to you!"
I had to deal with the situation described there more than once, and I’m sure that most readers are familiar with the situation.
However, just the other day, wandering around Wikipedia, I found the answer to the question “What kind of phukinglyphuk comes with this world?”, Which tormented me for many years. I want to share my find here:
The Dunning - Krueger effect is a cognitive distortion, which consists in the fact that people with a low level of qualification make erroneous conclusions, make unsuccessful decisions and are unable to recognize their mistakes due to the low level of their qualifications(emphasis mine, track). This leads to their overestimation of their own abilities, while really highly qualified people, on the contrary, tend to lower their abilities and suffer from insufficient self-confidence, considering others more competent. Thus, less competent people generally have a higher opinion of their own abilities than is characteristic of competent people, who also tend to assume that others evaluate their abilities as low as they do. (selection is mine again, track)
The hypothesis of the existence of such a phenomenon was put forward in 1999 by Justin Krueger and David Dunning, who at the same time referred to the statements of Charles Darwin (“Ignorance more often creates confidence than knowledge”) [Charles Darwin The Descent of Man (w) Introduction, page 4 (1871).] And Bertrand Russell (“One of the unpleasant properties of our time is that those who feel confident are stupid, and those who have at least some imagination and understanding are full of doubt and indecision”).
To test this hypothesis, Kruger and Dunning conducted a series of experiments involving students attending psychology courses at Cornell University. At the same time, they proceeded from the results of studies of their predecessors, which demonstrated that incompetence largely stems from ignorance of the fundamentals of a particular activity, whether it is reading comprehension, driving, playing chess, playing tennis, etc.
They hypothesized that for people with low qualifications in any type of activity the following is characteristic:
After training, they have the ability to realize the level of their previous incompetence, even if their true competence after training practically does not change.
The results of experiments confirming the hypothesis were published in English. Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in December 1999 (link: original 1999 study text).
By the way, the authors of the article were even awarded the Shnobel Prize in Psychology for the year 2000 (this fact in itself does not underestimate the scientific value, by the way. The so-called Shnobel Prize (Ig Nobel Prize) is humorous, but not satirical, the fact Contrary to popular belief, its presentation does not in any way call into question the scientific value of the awarded works, as it is, by definition, awarded “for achievements that make you laugh first and then think” (first make people laugh, and then make them think) . Then st is not a "Razzie", I would like to clarify this fact alone. The prize is awarded for an unusual and ingenious research that could attract attention and spur people's interest in science, medicine and technology.
The results of other similar studies, including the development of the original work, were presented in 2003 and 2008. Thus, we can assume that the Dunning-Krueger effect is a truly existing psychological cognitive phenomenon.
People who come for interviews who do not have basic skills of the chosen profession, BolgenOS and Babushkina Antivirus, all this shameful shame created in the programs “about science” on Russian television, apparently all this is a visually visible manifestation of the Dunning-Krueger effect, surrounding us daily.
