Monitoring Runet Technologies for 2013
The Department of Information and Analytical Research RU-CENTER Group published an annual report with the results of monitoring the use of CMS and various technological solutions in Runet in 2013. Every month, the http://monoid.nic.ru/ robot polled hosts for a list (popular parking lots were excluded from it). In total, more than 1 million domains in the .RU zone were surveyed. For more details on the methodology, see here .
Some of the results are quite interesting. Since surveys were conducted monthly, you can see not only the final result, but also evaluate the process in dynamics. In other words, you can track the migration of sites between different CMS.
The robot distinguishes seven leading CMS by the number of sites: Drupal, WordPress, Joomla !, MODx, 1C-Bitrix, NetCat, UMI.CMS. At the same time, there are two unconditional leaders - Joomla! and WordPress. These CMSs account for 70% of websites running one or another of the detected content management systems.

The anomaly in June-July is most likely due to technical problems on communication channels with one or more hosting providers, experts of RU-CENTER Group consider
. During 2013 between Joomla! and WordPress there was a contest. At the beginning of the year Joomla !, was in the lead, but in June WordPress caught up with a rival, and by the end of the year came out on top.

Among the rest of the CMS, the authors of the study pay attention to the success of the 1C-Bitrix commercial product, which is even ahead of Drupal, although the latter is offered with a free license.

The popularity of “boxed” CMS is a purely Russian phenomenon, this is not the case abroad. And in RuNet, 13% of sites already work on them.
Statistics on hosters show that the most popular sites for Russian sites are Leaseweb (Holland, Germany, USA) and Hetzner (Germany). However, in general, Russian hosters control about 70% of the market.

The following table shows the cumulative annual migration volumes between CMS.
During the year, many sites switched from Joomla! to other CMS. The greatest benefit from this was received by 1C-Bitrix (+ 5% of installations only due to Joomla!).
RU-CENTER also measured the average duration of loading web pages on one of its channels. It turned out that over the year, the speed increased almost one and a half times - and this despite the fact that the average size of the site’s index page increased over the year from 26 to 29 KB.

The authors of the nginx web server will be pleased that about 250 thousand Runet sites have switched to it over the year.

An interesting part of the RU-CENTER study is monitoring the use of modern web technologies. “An important and clearly visible trend is the growing interest of web developers in HTML5 and related promising technology specifications. Their penetration into website building is proceeding with a speed significantly exceeding the speed of the emergence of new websites, ”the report said.

“Most modern sites are developed immediately for a particular content management system. The market presents not only the common solutions included in the study, but also a wide variety of proprietary CMS created by various developers, among which web studios dominate. The shares of each of these CMS are small, although in general they occupy a tangible part of the market, estimated at 10-15% of websites, ”the authors of the study write.
