Recently, Huawei introduced Huawei Ultrastick technology, which will equip most of the tablets in the Chinese market with 3G support.

Many companies have taken up the production of devices with support for Ultra Stick technology, but the only model from Ross & Moor is officially presented on the Russian market so far.
A detailed review of the tablet Ross & Moor RM-997 - under the cut.

    Device specifications

    • Data transfer rate: HSDPA 14.4 Mbps, HSUPA: 5.76 Mbps
    • Modem weight <30 grams
    • Connector size: 65 x 35 x 3.3 mm.

    Equipment

The device is quite standard for tablets:
    • Cable for connecting to a microUSB-USB format computer
    • Charger 2.5 A / 5V with USB output
    • Device Charging Cable
    • OTG cable for connecting external drives
    • Cable for connecting an Ultra Stick modem to a computer
    • Ultra Stick Modem
    • Napkin
    • Headphones

    Appearance

Externally, the device has a standard design for 10 inch tablets , which is difficult to distinguish from the iPad even with less than 3 meters.

The back panel is metallic golden color. At the top of the tablet is a plastic insert on which there is a slot for Ultra Stick.

And in the lower part there are 2 speakers and a 2MP camera. The location of the speakers is very doubtful, because sometimes, when watching movies, the hand closes the speakers and you have to turn the device over.

The charging connector, micro USB and headphone jack are grouped on the end of the tablet in its left part, next to the power button, microphone and memory card slot.

On the front panel is a 0.3 megapixel camera and a light sensor. The frame around the screen is white and fairly wide.

    Screen

    The Ross & Moor RMD-997 tablet received a 10-touch high-definition display with a resolution of 2048x1536.
We leave the ballad about viewing angles and richness of color for marketers.

Of the features, I would like to note the ability to switch the screen resolution through the settings. So, if you want a lower resolution, but for the same money, then just open the screen settings and switch the resolution to 1600x1200.

I did not notice much difference, although I said the same thing when I compared the screens of the iPad and iPad 3. So, I think, for some, the difference will be noticeable.

    Software

The latest version of Android 4.2 is installed on the tablet.

This is a “bare" Android with a standard set of programs. Also, ES Explorer is pre-installed for accessing files on the tablet and MX player, which supports the playback of almost all known video formats.

The system starts in 40 seconds. System default language is Russian. Of the advantages, it is worth noting the ability to make calls through the speakerphone

    And send SMS

There are no complaints about the operation of the system itself. Apparently four cores and 2GB of RAM make themselves felt.
There is one gripe, which is most likely related to the screen resolution - not all applications support it, so you won’t be able to install them. But this phenomenon is most likely temporary.

    Platform and Performance

The Ross & Moor RM-997 tablet is based on one of the latest quad-core ARM chips from Rockchip. Thanks to 2 GB of RAM, the tablet can easily cope even with demanding games.

Here is a small comparison of quad processors.

    Detailed specifications RK3188
    • 4-core Cortex-A9 processor, 28 nm HGKM manufacturing process, 1.6 GHz
    • GPU Mali-400MP4 operates at a frequency of 600 MHz, support for OpenGL ES 1.1 / 2.0 and OpenVG 1.1
    • Specialized 2D Processor
    • Memory support including DDR3, DDR3L and LPDDR2
    • 1080p / 60fps video decoding

    Memory

Built-in memory is only 8Gb. A rather strange decision to produce a tablet with such a small amount of memory, but this problem can be solved by purchasing a 32GB MicroSD memory card. Fortunately, their cost in the market does not exceed 1000 rubles. The read speed of the internal memory is 10.6 MB / s, and the write speed is 11.2.

The memory itself is distributed in a standard way for Android devices. For example, 1.6 GB is allocated for applications, and a little more than 4 GB remains available to the user

    Multimedia

The Ross & Moor RM-997 tablet reproduced all popular mkv, avi, mp4, wmv formats through a standard player,

but I had to use an MX player for 2K and 4K video.

    Working hours

The tablet’s uptime was impressive. The device was discharged from 97% to 16%, playing video in MP4 1080P format, in 8 hours 15 minutes. That is, the battery should last for 9-10 hours of video viewing.

    Huawei UltraStick

The tablet is equipped with a HUAWEI E122-2 modem made using UltraStick technology. This technology was introduced on August 26 by HUAWEI.
According to the company, in the future we should expect Ultrastick with 4G support. So it will be enough to buy an additional modem, and not completely change the tablet. How this will be implemented at the software level is not entirely clear, since the RK3188 chip does not have 4G LTE hardware support.
By the way, modems are not the only way to use this technology. In the future, it is planned to understaff the device with RAM, a GPS receiver, or for example two SIM cards.

    Mobile Testing.

According to the manufacturer, the modem can issue up to 14 Mbps for download, but it was not possible to achieve such results. The maximum speed that the tablet issued did not exceed 5.5 Mbps, which is also not a bad indicator.
In order to start working with a mobile network, it is enough to place a standard sim card in the corresponding slot on the modem, and insert the modem into the tablet.

After the manipulations are done, the sim card is determined almost immediately, but you can use the Internet only after 1 minute. The device does not need to be rebooted.

For the test, I used a Megafon sim card with the basic Internet tariff “All Inclusive” and MTC with the “Super Bit” tariff

    Megaphone

    MTS

I would also like to note that the modem easily connects to the computer through a special cord that comes with the kit.

Huawei Ultrastick is defined as a CD drive.

Open the disk and run the installation program.

After installing the program, you need to configure a new connection using your operator’s data.

Now click “Connect” and use the “unlimited” Internet.

    General impressions

Rumor has it that the Android system has finally stopped braking on only 4 cores. This tablet helped me make sure of this.
The main highlight of the Ross & Moor RM-997 tablet is Ultrastick technology, which has just begun to appear on the market, but is already making a good impression. And if the development of Ultrastick technology continues to develop, then in the future we will find many original solutions.
By the way, the price for the device will be about 9000-10000 rubles.
