Welcome Mozilla Location Service

Today, the Mozilla blog has news about the launch of the Mozilla Location Service pilot project , the purpose of which is to provide geolocation using WiFi and base stations of mobile operators.

Although similar commercial solutions already exist, such as geolocation from Google, there is not a single truly large-scale yet open service. This is what they were going to fix in the Mozilla foundation.

Now there is very little data in the database and I doubt that this can be used. For example, my location was determined in the Atlantic Ocean somewhere east of Brazil. But owners of Android phones can do their part by installing an application for collecting point-by-point data.

You can follow the results on the map.and in the ranking of users.
In addition, there are global statistics with motivating graphs.
