CreepyDOL - Raspberry Pi Mobile Spy Network

American computer security specialist Brendan O'Connor demonstrated at the recent BlackHat USA 2013 computer security conference in Las Vegas the development of CreepyDOL (Creepy Distributed Object Locator) - special software and F-BOMB devices (Falling / Ballistically -launched Object that Makes Backdoors) based on the Raspberry Pi, with which you can create a network that intercepts Wi-Fi traffic. The cost of components for one such device is about $ 57.

The device is equipped with an ARM processor with a clock frequency of 700 MHz, 256 MB of RAM, as well as two Wi-Fi controllers. CreepyDOL intercepts WIFI traffic and can collect sensitive user information. Several devices can be connected to the same network, where they will exchange data. Each device is small enough and can be easily hidden even in a public place.

Almost any modern smartphone sends a large amount of personal information about the owner in the clear. In addition, you can easily fix the location. Example of “tracking” the author of the development:

All information is processed on a central server, and it is possible to track the user's movements and the data received from him in real time.

Using a VPN does not save: for example, on iOS devices, you can connect to a VPN only after connecting to a Wi-Fi network, and during this time the iPhone will have time to check for any updates, send messages, upload files to Dropbox, etc. IOS also transmits data about the device in an open form:

Brendan O'Connor says that the project’s task is to show that not only the government with millions of budgets can monitor ordinary users, but also any other person with ~ $ 500 per network of ten devices. Although it’s hard to believe in such goals: on the website of the project’s author, Malice Afterthought , you can soon buy everything you need to create your own spy network.
