Linux laptop designed for developers

At a conference of Ubuntu developers, Dell announced the resumption of work on the Sputnik project - this is a Ubuntu 12.04 laptop with a basic set of tools (emacs, vim, git, etc.) and support for additional “profiles” for software. For example, now we are working on building the first profile: Android, Ruby and JavaScript.

Sputnik is conceived as the optimal standard configuration plus a meta-system for customization. Sputnik configuration is considered as code and laid out on Github for edits and improvements. This is the main "highlight" of the project.

Sputnik is made on Dell XPS13 hardware. If you have such a device purchased with a different operating system, then right now you can download the image with the basic set(True, the touchpad support for Ubuntu has not yet been done).

Dell plans to sell notebooks with basic configurations, but by this time there should be a repository with an extensive set of additional profiles.

The Sputnik project is funded by Dell's internal investment fund. He was supported by Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth and even suggested some ideas on how Sputnik can use the OpenStack cloud so developers can create micro-clouds locally and then transfer them to OpenStack.

If you have any other ideas on this subject, leave them on the Dell IdeaStorm website .
