The Big Divorce Theory or what we pay dibs for

imageEveryone, probably, who is following the news of high (and not so) technologies, thought about what is happening in this market and what it will turn into in the near future. About my vision of this problem, in fact, there is a post.

I don’t have any particular illusions, do not pretend to be any uniqueness of my point of view, but decided to paint all this in order to:
- try my hand at a new field of activity for me: writing articles
- systematize scattered thoughts in
it’s possible for one’s own head to start a holivar with a lively discussion of this topic by the Habrasociety.

I was visited by such a thought. Technology is currently treading water. They have great potential, large production capacities, great opportunities, and there is nowhere to apply all this. There is something missing to strive for. It seems like everything that was needed, everything that I wanted 10 years ago, has already been realized, even more has been realized. And now they are improving it a little. Everything is getting better, more convenient, but convenience is achieved mainly due to interfaces, which have really stepped forward in a short period of time. A figure penetrates our life more and more. We are becoming more and more technology dependent. And she, by the way, is now striving to put a pig right now (just remember how people were late for work due to the cancellation of maternity time). At the technology level, by and large, cardinal changes are not observed. The feeling that SOMETHING is missing ... Although, IT, it seems, is in the genre of fiction, not even in a single copy. But in reality, this has not yet been implemented. Or maybe it was possible, only we don’t know about it? ..

We don’t know, because for economic reasons all kinds of dough and good corporations feed us with new products that are not of great practical value for the target audience for which manufacturers are positioning them ...

Phones and tablets that are more powerful (well, not yet more powerful, but everything is ahead) of my home PC: all these Gigahertz processors and Gigabytes of RAM - all this does not seem particularly necessary in devices of this kind.

I must say right away that below in the text I will only mention what I personally had experience with. In particular, these are desktop computers running OS Windows and smartphones running OS Android. And for this reason, in general, it will not be said here about Apple’s technology so adored by many.

About desktops

Suppose a businessman named Petr Vasilyevich Pupkin comes to a store and wants to buy a computer for work. What does he see there? Entire shelves of powerful machines equipped with Intel Core i3, Intel Core i5, Intel Core i7 processors, with the coolest graphics cards. And all this stuff comes with a monitor of about 25 inches ... He sees how cool it is, and he also wants one. Only I somehow find it difficult to immediately name a task from the arsenal of a moderate demanding user, for which four cores would be so necessary? Count pi on a home PC with an accuracy of 20 thousand decimal places? No, Peter Vasilievich will not do this. Mount video? Although a resource-intensive task, but necessary rather for clip makers. He needs to google some information, build a plate in Excel, a pornwatch a movie with the family at the weekend. It is most likely that for Mr. Pupkin, such a high performance will turn out to be like a dog’s fifth wheel . Toys? Perhaps he will deliver a couple, but it’s far from the fact that they will turn out to be so demanding, and a quad-core processor will be required for their work. There are not very many such toys, but for everything else there is something simpler.

So why am I all this. Of course, it’s great that the iron is so powerful right now. It’s far from a fact that for every end user it’s good. After all, such a configuration carries not only speed and performance. It is fraught with an increase in the cost of the product, as well as an increase in the consumption of resources, for example, electricity.
But no one warned our hero about this. A slogan invented by marketers and saying: “The newer and more powerful, the better, has long been entrenched in his mind.” And what was released more than six months ago is already the last century. "
People are persistently forced to throw out their money. Come on, throw it on something you need. They are told: “Your piece of iron is already old. What? Not. It doesn’t give a damn that there are 8 GHz and 8 cores, it’s old, come and buy a new one from us. She has 16 cores of 16 Gigahertz. If you buy it, you will get a big profit in the form of an occasion to hang out with friends. ” Those who really need it are aware of their needs, offering all this to others is a good way to make money, no more ...

What we carry in our pockets

about smartphones on Android

Further. According to the logic of things, devices should become more compact, because technologies are developing.

For example, a smartphone. This is a handheld device. And what really is? The biggest smartphone that I managed to hold in my hands was the Samsung Galaxy SII with a diagonal of 4.3 ". And somehow it didn’t seem very convenient to me; when I grab it with my hand, holding it, and even more so getting a finger in opposite parts of the screen, becomes it’s not very convenient. And this despite the fact that my hands are not at all tiny. But manufacturers and more than 4 inches seemed a little small. Everyone strives to put a larger display so that the phone does not fit in the pocket, obviously. 4.5 is now considered normal. ", 4.7" ... Someone even managed to make a "phone" with a diagonal SE 5.3 ".

HTC is also very "pleased" with itsnew flagship . Seriously! Four cores! We have not yet learned how to rationally use two cores on smartphones, but here four. Do they really think that it is vital for someone there?

Isn't it more logical to focus on the battery life there, on the stability of work, on something more useful? Is it normal, bringing the phone home and unpacking the box, to receive from the manufacturer an endless series of quests of the form: “How to make the battery last for a day and not to be left without communication? How to hear the interlocutor? How to get rid of the loss of sound during a conversation? " An optional car is also possible with a cart of individual glitches for a specific model, the existence of which the user is forced to put up with. Judging by the comments on thisthe topic, among Habrausers, there is an increasing tendency to use two communication devices: one of them is a simple push-button dialer, the second is an Android smartphone for games, the Internet, reading, etc. This option, although it looks like a solution to the problem, but if you think about it - this is never right. After all, what kind of phone is it that cannot cope with its main task? ..

Manufacturers love experimenting so much. So they would have experimented. They would take and make the flagship something more compact, with a 3.5 "- 4" commercial screen. They would bring the device to mind, release the firmware update on time, and then they would take it and look at the sales. For some reason, it seems to me that the popularity of such a model would not be lower than that of the current flagship shovels. In short, we would see how% not-let's-talk-who% smartphones do. But for some reason, Android smartphone makers do not want to learn from smart people. Maybe they have some kind of gigantism complex connected with this, and the size is so important for them? At this pace, we will soon live to see that the phone will be more bulky than it was originally.

But at the same time, even if the company's flagship is the size of a brick, if it has at least 20 cores, they will buy it because of the policy of software support by manufacturers of their devices.

Speaking of that. Everything looks as if this policy is aimed at the only thing - profit. Of course, it is clear that everything is just that, but somehow I want to believe that not everyone cares about people. So Google said that the Nexus One will not receive updates to the 4th Android. And most shocking is the statement that the device is old. And it’s okay from Google, because many users think so. In particular, in a discussion on Habré this news, a group stood out that claimed that Nexus is old, that the iron in it is old, almost "prehistoric by the standards of technology, which is taking great strides." And what do I see as a person who does not understand the intricacies of architecture and other things? Yes, I see that these steps are not leaps and bounds. They are many times smaller. Yes, where to go there. They crawl - that's how I see it. I guess I'm wrong over the past three years, many changes have occurred in the hardware and functionality of smartphones on Android. Here, for example, what we will see, putting in a row various Google phones of the same manufacturer, released in different years. Would it be easy, without an idea of the activities of this manufacturer, to say which device was released in which year? Even looking at the technical specifications is complicated. Then how you can call the phone old - it is not clear.

What in general

True, there is news that against this background looks like, indeed, a step forward. This is really impressive. But the scale of such news is not as large as we would like, the scope of their application is quite narrow.
And in mass production, the most global article of progress is the diagonal of the display.
One gets the feeling that they are moving according to the knurled technology, gradually sliding into a dull shit, slowing down in comparison with the nineties and zero. And it seems that after another 5 years they will stop completely and will stand still until something gives them a new impetus.

Something like a conclusion

Apparently, in the near future some global discovery should be made, which will set the further direction of technology development. It’s scary to imagine what marketing specialists can come up with if this discovery lingers on the threshold of our bright future ...
