Black Mirror Project: Controlling the Phone with Concentration of Thought

As always in such projects, the control device does not read the operator’s thoughts, but reads the dynamics of activity of different parts of the brain. The project uses the appropriate controller from EEG, then a control circuit that converts the brain activity indicator into voice commands that the phone understands, and the phone itself (iPhone with Siri). The project of the guys was called Black Mirror.

The developers explain that the scheme they created uses previously recorded brain activity readings, the characteristics that occur when pronouncing a particular command. The readings are recorded in the memory of the control system, which is checked with the current signal coming from the EEG controller and the database of recorded signals.

If the signal received from the controller coincides with the previously recorded readings, the control system reproduces the corresponding voice command, which is fed to the audio input of the phone. This command, in turn, is perceived by Siri, and the phone begins to perform a certain action.

In general, the system created by the guys is so far impractical, since it requires a computer, and a controller that reads brain readings, and a control circuit, and a telephone. But all this is quite interesting. Perhaps, over time, the system will be able to miniaturize, and then the new feature “managing the phone with the help of thoughts” will appear in the phones.
