HTC Desire S - Special Desire

What the letter S means, which was added to the names of HTC smartphones in 2011, no one could really explain to me, but I suspect that I had in mind something like Super, because the new devices turned out to be really very cool. I especially liked Desire S - although now it’s not top-end (Sensation was recently announced), but it is perfectly balanced, and even very picky friends unanimously say that it is cool.

    Design

Soft touch plastic is, of course, good, but metal is in fashion now, so it is not surprising that Desire S has acquired a unibody aluminum case. This, firstly, reliably protects the phone in the event of a fall, and secondly, such a monolithic gadget is much more pleasant to hold in your hand than the slightly creaking first Desire.

And in the hand, the new gadget is, perhaps, even better than the previous model. Its length decreased by half a centimeter, and everything else (width, thickness, diagonal of the display, etc.) remained the same.

    Buttons

Buttons in the classical sense of the word two times and miscalculated! One - as always, from above - to turn on and lock, the second (dual) - on the left side to adjust the volume. At the same time, there is a feeling that the “On” button is too tight, and the rocker on the side - on the contrary, is pressed too easily. In nine out of ten cases, wanting to lock the device, I invariably pressed one of the volume keys with my ring finger.

Well, those keys that are under the display are touch-sensitive. I can’t say that these changes are very pleasing to me, but in general it’s not so terrible, as a slight vibration response is still present. Well, the concept would probably have broken, if designers had decided to leave the hardware buttons - they wouldn’t fit into the new design.

    Connectors

There are also only two connectors: a 3.5 mm audio output on the upper end and a micro-USB input on the left side. The latter is not covered by any plugs, which is why a pocket pile is always stuffed there. But in my opinion, it’s better that way than constantly picking up the protective socket with your fingernail, which will eventually come off anyway.

    Display

Unlike the screen of the first Desire, the 3.7-inch Desire S display is made using Super LCD technology, not AMOLED. On the one hand, this is bad - power consumption is higher and color rendering is slightly worse, but on the other hand, such a matrix is not so expensive to manufacture, which ultimately makes the entire gadget cheaper. In this case, the picture remains quite juicy, and in the sun it burns out very slightly. In short, a good display. At the level. And yes, it now supports full multi-touch!

    Iron

Hardware also evolved. Desire S is built on the Qualcomm MSM 8255 platform on which the recent Desire HD flagship was based. The chipset includes an ARM gigahertz processor, 768 MB of RAM, an Adreno 205 graphics chip and 1.1 gigabytes of internal memory, which can be expanded with microSDHC cards. At the same time, an 8 GB card is included in the kit - not bad at all!

Subjectively, the phone practically does not slow down: it immediately stores a bunch of “heavy” sites, turns over programs and almost any games (of course, there are those that are optimized strictly for two cores, but here only one). But if you want some numbers in a vacuum, please - in the Quadrant benchmark, which I traditionally use to measure the performance of android phones, the gadget scored 1267 points. This is almost the same as the recently scored SE Xperia Arc (1381) and a little less than Desire HD (1581).

    Communication

Among other things, a change in the chipset entails an increase in the data transfer rate. Desire S supports the maximum speed in 3G networks of up to 14.4 Mbps for reception and up to 5.76 Mbps for transmission. Plus, the Wi-Fi module now supports the n standard, which cannot but rejoice - the increase, say, when downloading a movie from network storage is really noticeable!

    Camera

The quality of the photos that Desire S gives out has pleased me, although there are more advanced solutions in the market. First of all, I like the fact that positive dynamics has improved, and the pictures taken with this model look much better than those obtained on other HTC smartphones. In particular, the developers decided a bug with blurring the left side of the frame and greatly increased the rate of fire - autofocus is induced in a split second, and the shutter immediately releases.

    image

But of course, as before, the photograph on the monitor screen and on the mobile display are two big differences. It is necessary to increase the frame, as its origin becomes noticeable - only microarrays of mobile phones give such characteristic noises and artifacts.

    Software

The smartphone is running the latest version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. By tradition, the HTC Sense 2.1 interface is evenly “smeared” on top of this “carrot”. Functionally, the latter practically does not differ from previous versions - it is still the same good old shell with one small innovation - the cataloguer at the bottom of the application menu.

    Working hours

Pleased with the time. In active use mode , the smart phone keeps quiet for 12 hours: from the moment it is removed from charging in the morning, until the device returns to the shelf. This means something like the following: several email accounts constantly turned on in push mode, GTalk, a browser, about 15 minutes of calls per day, SMS, plus music and video on the way from work and back.

    Competitor

To hell with marketers! Forget that the SE Xperia arc is the flagship, and the HTC Desire S is gone. They are built on the same chipset, have similar performance and are officially in the same price category. But in online stores the first one can still be found for at least 22 thousand rubles, but the second one is already sold for 15 at the Web, although 21,990 are being asked for it in the company store. It’s clear that PCT is not for sale for 15k, but personally it would not stop !

At the same time, a larger screen in conjunction with Sony's proprietary image-enhancing software technologies speaks in favor of SE, while unibody aluminum body and Sense shell, which personally pleases me more than what the Japanese-Swedish alliance offers, favor HTC. .

    Summary

Desire S - in the terminology of motorists excellent restyling of the previous model. Appearance remained recognizable, productivity did not grow much, but the company smoothed out those minor “roughnesses” that were present in the usual Desire, making the gadget again relevant for the year ahead. Bravo HTC! Five points!
