Manual control

The last watch I had was in the tenth class, it seems. I perfectly remember my “Ray” on a leather strap - such was the gadget. But this was already the first half of zero, and the clock as a tool for determining time was already turning into an anachronism - you could watch the time on a mobile phone, computer and even a microwave. Time is the most important information trend of our time, judging by the number of options how you can find out.

Another trend - miniaturization of phones (remember the joke about the only thing men measure, who has less? Just a couple of years ago, it was still relevant) - suddenly changed in the direction of the growth of diagonals of screens and, accordingly, dimensions. Mobile phones have again become not so mobile.

Like curves on a plane, trends sometimes intersect. And at the intersections amazing things are born. Sony Ericsson LiveView - of these. As the manufacturer himself describes the concept of the gadget, Sony Ericsson LiveView "is part of the portfolio of Sony Ericsson Extras - a line of accessories that expand the capabilities of mobile phones."

This is an auxiliary device that combines the functions of an informer, a remote control, an alarm and a clock, which becomes completely indispensable when you get used to it.

    Packaging and equipment

LiveView is fixed inside the diamond-shaped box directly on the clip, which is one of the chips of its form factor:

Inside the box, there is also a hand strap, a frame and two pins carefully packaged in a bag, on which the strap is attached to the frame:

The power supply with microUSB-connector and user manual, the most familiar language in which turned out to be English.

This box will cost about 3000-3500 re when it goes on sale in late March.

    Appearance and dimensions

Square, with sides 35x35 mm and with a screen of 1.3 ”, LiveView on hand is most similar to a simple electronic clock. And in principle, it can be used in that quality - at least I used it most often when I had to look at the time, and getting into my pocket was uncomfortable. A long-forgotten elegant gesture - raising a hand to the eyes, push the cuff of the shirt with one finger and look at the time.

The device is quite thin - 11 mm, but because of its small size it looks chubby. Two control keys are located at the top in the corners: on the left is the on / off key combined with the LED, on the right is the two-shoulder selection key, and on the bottom is the micro USB port.

Around the screen - a wide black frame. This is not a quirk of developers, but an urgent need: the fields around the LiveView display are a control - they are all four pressed, allowing navigation through a simple menu.

By default, the display is turned off so as not to waste energy. It is turned on by pressing any button and by default shows the time and date. Resolution 128x128 allows you to read SMS, for example. Just write the answer from LiveView itself will not work :)

    Beginning of work

The first thing you need to update the software to the latest. I already wrote once that the software update is organized so clearly that it is almost impossible to make a mistake. In order not to be unfounded, I will demonstrate this clearly.

After starting the Update Service program, you need to do only six steps:

    Select the device (LiveView):

    Press the button:

    Release the button

Make sure the firmware is up to date

Wait for the installation to complete

And disconnect the device from the computer

The next step is to install the free LiveView application from the Android Market on your phone. Or you can simply read the barcode directly from the screen:

By the way, LiveView is compatible not only with Sony Ericsson phones. The site has a full and constantly updated list of compatible devices , currently Samsung Galaxy S, Nexus One 2.2, HTC Desire, HTC Desire Z, HTC Wildfire 2.1, Motorola Milestone 2.0.1 and Motorola Milestone XT720.

Then you need to install the LiveView application of the same name - without it, the phone can find the device, but it will not work to establish pairing.

With it, LiveView instantly becomes a full extension of your tube.

    Functional

    So what does LiveView do?
    • Monitor incoming and missed calls
    • Notify of receipt and show SMS
    • Remind me about calendar events
    • Control media player
    • Search phone
    • Notify about updates on facebook, twitter and rss feeds

The latter functions, by the way, develop the concept of a single activity tape that Sony Ericsson develops in the Timescape application - even without reaching for the phone, you can find out in the general stream what you wrote on Twitter between the last call and the received SMS.

Management through the LiveView application includes the ability to disconnect the device, turn on / off the vibration signal, mark all notifications as read and, of course, choose which activities — whether incoming calls, sms or tweets — should be notified:

    Using

Options LiveView implies two options for wearing it - wrist, on a strap, or using a clip. With the first, everything is clear - in the end, he can show time. From far away on his hand he resembles a simple Casio watch of my school time. Oh, childhood, childhood ...

To replace the clip with a strap, you need to pry out the clip frame with your fingernail and replace it with a strap mount. Then you need to twist into the loop loops of the sleeve, insert them into the ears of the mount. This jewelry work - I fiddled for about three minutes before I drove all the balls into the pockets. But the strap can be changed - even on crocodile skin. This is in case, for example, if his cloth material seems to someone insufficiently glamorous.

The option with a clip allows you to wear LiveView, for example, on a bag’s belt, on a belt or fasten it to your pocket:

Or attach to something at the table to look at work:

    Or like this: It

’s more convenient, but for me - the format of the wrist is out of competition: you get used to the LiveView on your hand instantly, and after a while you stop noticing it. He only reminds himself of himself with a modest buzz when, for example, an incoming call comes in. This is really convenient - on the first day I managed to pick up the phone after I left the phone in my jacket, and another time - when I forgot it in another room. This is also true for girls who do not always hear the ringing of a phone buried in a bag.

But a missed call or SMS is non-fatal - if you are not an ambulance operator: you can call back. The real killer features, in my opinion, is the phone search function - if the handset is lost, then LiveView will make it give a voice - of course, within the range of the bluetooth signal (up to 10 if there are no thick walls), and the player is remotely controlled.

A long press of the selection button (on the right) opens a laconic music control interface: pressing the left-right edges of the screen switches the tracks, up and down control the volume, pressing the selection button once pauses, long press returns to the main menu. This is probably more convenient than the remote control on the headset itself - especially when it is hidden under thick winter clothes.

The battery lasts up to 4 days - that is, exactly longer than any smartphone on an android - and it charges in just two hours. At the end of charging, the red light will change to green. And to remove the strap from your hand for charging is not necessary at all - just unfasten LiveView itself.

    All sorts of things

The functionality of LiveView can be significantly expanded thanks to the ability to interact with third-party plug-ins. To find them there is a special application - LiveWare Manager .

I decided to experiment with two programs: Moon Phase Pro and Live View Contact Call .

Moon Phase Pro turned out to be a full-fledged paid application for Android ($ 0.99 ~ 29 rubles), which can also be launched with LiveView - however, the wow effect of the ability to find out the dates of the next full moon seemed very doubtful to me, but for everything else it's better run from phone:

The free LiveView ContactCall plug-in is a completely different matter; it allows you to enter phone contacts and make calls with LiveView, which brings the device's capabilities to a new, completely adult level. But there is also a plug-in for working with Gmail for LiveView , also LiveWare is compatible with Smart Training for healthy lifestyle and jogging in the morning , and, as colleagues from LiveJournal write , there are already two dozen compatible Android Market LiveView applications and plugins for it, the list of which is constantly updated.

Everything new is well forgotten old

Sony Ericsson LiveView can be placed in the encyclopedia as an illustration of the saying "you quickly get used to the good." This is a pure, distilled case of a marketing decision - a device, the need for which is not immediately obvious, but having tried it out, you don’t want to let it out of your hands. Nominee for the Most Useful Device Award at CES in 2011.

Speaking of awards. “During the Telecom Xperience in November 2010 in Utrecht, Holland, the Sony Ericsson LiveView device won two awards -“ The Most Innovative Accessory ”and“ The Best General Impression, ” Sony Ericsson tells us .

Who knows, it is possible when technological progress finally reaches the broadcast of the picture directly to the retina of the eye, in healthy “shovels” of smartphones, which therefore consist of almost one display, there will be no need - and then only such compact wrist control panels will be in demand. He would have to add a hand factory, for complete autonomy - and here he is, the perfect gadget.

    Until we meet again;)
