Google Spends $ 100 Million To Protect YouTube

Google chief financial officer Patrick Pichette made a curious statement during a company conference call that discussed Google’s profit in the second quarter of this year: the corporation "invested" $ 100 million to protect YouTube from Viacom lawsuits. The latter estimated its damage at $ 1 billion.

In 2007, Viacom sued Google due to unauthorized uploading of 160 thousand clips to YouTube (Google bought a video service in 2006). Since then, sparring has not stopped - in the courtroom and beyond. Google has claimed that this issue falls under the protection of the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act).

Last month, a court ruled in favor of Google, thereby ending the bickering. But, I must admit, the victory was not cheap. $ 100 million - I wonder how many lawyers worked on this case.

On the other hand, at the same meeting, the corporation's revenue for the second quarter was announced - it amounted to $ 6.8 billion, which is 24% more than the same period last year. In total, the company has $ 30 billion in cash in its accounts.
