Presentation of the innovative OnLive service! in vegas

Throughout the year, Steve Perlman has been telling us about OnLive. And so, on February 18, at DICE Summit in Las Vegas, he showed it in action.

At the moment, the service is in beta. Contrary to the forecasts of skeptics, OnLive is functioning, and without any apparent glitches. Perlman demonstrated that playing dynamic shooters is possible without the active participation of the user's computer in the processing of the game.

If the service is finally launched, it will open the mass market for digital distribution of games, as a result of which the cost will be reduced. There will also be no need to purchase various gaming platforms for the sake of one game.

“The customer gains gaming experience without worrying about the platforms,” Perlman comments.

We worked on the service for eight years, creating a compression technology that allows you to send content over the network in almost real time. The delay is measured in milliseconds. When playing in SD, you need to connect to the Internet at a speed of 1 Mbps. You can play in HD, the required channel width is 5mbits / s. According to Perlman, in 26% of users the speed exceeds 5 megabits, 71% of the potential audience are connected to the Internet at least 2 Mbps.

OnLive will also have means of communication between users. Moreover, you can watch your friend’s actions in the game and send him messages at the same time.

Mike McGarvey and Steve Perlman showed live Unreal Tournament and Burnout Paradise. When entering the multiplayer mode, earlier we saw a list of servers and boring screenshots of the map. All this is in the past. OnLive shows us a video from the current match in real time right on the menu! Perlman mentioned the function of capturing video from games built into the service. You can easily demonstrate the match to your friends and acquaintances.

All games load almost instantly. Only a few seconds have passed from the launch to the Unreal Tournament 3 main menu!

At the time of the demonstration, the server was in San Francisco. Let me remind you, the presentation was held in Las Vegas, which is 500 miles away. Before the launch, it is expected to open four more data centers in Dallas, Atlanta, Chicago and Washington.

To everyone’s surprise, Perlman’s team showed the public how to play ... on the iPhone ... Crysis! The game was not modified, a full version, except on a small screen.

“The gaming market is ripe for OnLive,” says Perlman. “If we do not create such a service, believe me, someone else will do it.”
