When you type www.wikipedia.org into the address bar of your browser, you do not need anything but to get to Wikipedia. Most likely you are not very familiar with what is happening in the background with the Domain Name System (DNS).

Today, as part of our ongoing efforts to make the Internet faster , we are launching our own DNS server, which we called Google Public DNS, and we invite you to try it.

Most of us are not familiar with DNS, as most often everything is handled by our provider (Internet Service Provider, ISP), but DNS provides important functions for the Internet. You can consider it a switch that translates easy-to-remember domain names - for example. www.google.com- a unique Internet Protocol (IP) number — for example, 74.125.45.100 — which computers use to communicate with each other.

Most Internet users perform hundreds of DNS queries every day, and some pages require several DNS queries before the site starts loading. This can slow down your browsing experience. Our research has shown that speed is important to users , so over the past few months, our engineers have been working to improve our public DNS server to make the Internet faster, safer and more reliable for the user. You can read about specific technical improvements that we have made to the documentation and get installation instructions on our website .

If you are an experienced user and you know how to change network settings, go to the Google Code Blog for detailed instructions and more information on how to install Google Public DNS on your computer or router.

When people start using Google Public DNS, we plan to share with what we learned from the web community and other DNS providers to improve the Internet experience for users around the world. The goal of Google Public DNS is useful to users all over the world while helping tens of thousands of DNS providers improve their services to ultimately make the Internet faster for everyone.
