askdev.ru - life after the habra effect

I would like to tell you what happened to the site after the recent publication here on Habrahabr.
    • What's new?
    • What is the habraeffect (each has his own, but I will talk about ours)

The publication about our project caused a heated discussion, in total more than 200 comments were left, many of which carried useful feedback on the site. There were good and bad reviews, but for us they are all excellent as they help make askdev better.

What has been done over the past month and a half?

    • Website design in general remained the same, but have changed the kinds of questions and answers in order to avoid mess clutter and improve the perception of information.
    • Support for gravatar was added, after which most of the users of the site have avatars.
    • Removed the gradient in the preview of the question and the "incomprehensible" background in the site header
    • Added sorting on the page tags by alphabet and popularity
    • The arrows for voting for questions and answers have become lighter so as not to “weight down” the left side of the site.
    • Account and profile is now one page on which you can see how your questions / answers and edit personal information
    • There is a section in the profile where you can see all your comments
    • Bugs were fixed in checking the username and when changing the password (they were not critical and did not interfere with the site)
    • URLs for questions are changed, question ID URL is added (search speed in the database by ID is of course higher than on a long line)
    • The tag cloud has been redesigned, all tags used only once are excluded, and the construction algorithm is now logarithmic
    • Updated user list page
    • Layout fixed, now there is no horizontal scrolling on 1024x768
    • You can’t vote now if there is no minimum rating (10 points)
    • RSS now displays the full text of the question (previously shortened)
    • Added widget for selecting interesting / ignored tags
    • You can now edit your answers and questions at any time, because the history of changes is now recorded and available for viewing. In the future, perhaps users with a high rating will be able to edit other people's answers / questions like on stackoverflow, but you still have to get to this point. In the new profile, the “Discussions” tab has been added where a feed of answers and comments addressed to the user is published
A small link to send the question to twitter

This, of course, is not the whole list of changes, because it makes no sense to list all the little things. Most of the changes are already small, but overall gave a good result.

So what is the habraeffect in our case?

I think this topic is interesting to many, especially those who are just going to put their project on the trial of hawkers in the future.

After getting to the main page, a lot of visitors came to the site. For clarity, I give a schedule for 7 days. The peak point on the chart is the day of fasting here.

      traffic graph

Then there were a couple of jumps with habrahabr, I don’t know what it was connected with, but they were not so noticeable anymore. At the moment, the number of visits has leveled off and is kept in the region of 200-300 per day.

Then probably the most important schedule is the number of registrations. It is very approximate, but I’ll say that the data on it is somewhere 10% underestimated, the goal is apparently not tuned exactly, but it’s easier for me to see the exact amount in the database, and analytics gives a general idea of the level. At the time of writing this post, the number of users is 790.

      registration schedule

The server was not quite ready for the Habra effect; during the stay on the main server, it fell twice. To prevent this from happening, I had to throw up the RAM urgently. If you believe that you will get to the main hub, prepare better than us, do the caching (we have but did not save), install the opcode cache, configure the server as expected, test the site under load, learn from other people's mistakes.

Work on the site continues, and will not stop until there is interest in the resource. Over this short period, the site has become more stable, faster and more convenient, dumb adult. I think soon the site will also become more beautiful, I did not forget reviews about the design.

In conclusion, I want to thank everyone who appreciated, expressed their positive or negative opinion, all who joined the resource. Special thanks to Habrahabr. If you are interested in following the development of the project, you can subscribe to twitter .
