Configuring Xmarks and Fast Dial for Firefox
What are we talking about.
Xmarks - synchronization, backup of bookmarks
Fast Dial - visual bookmarks (quick access window)
Problem. By themselves, Xmarks and Fast Dial work like clockwork. The problem arises in the case when you want to add some bookmarks to the Fast Dial at home, and others at work - Xmarks synchronizes your bookmarks in one look without a twinge of conscience.
The first thing that comes to mind: Xmarks supports profiles! We go to the Xmarks settings (RMB on the icon in the status bar -> “My Xmarks”), log in to the server, click on Sync Profiles, create two profiles (the “Add” button), for example Home and Work. If you have already synchronized your bookmarks, then in the list of bookmarks in the right window there is already a Fast Dial folder, it is checked in both profiles, which means that at home and at work you will have the same set of bookmarks. We remove the checkmark, which is logical - we do not synchronize this folder and in two browsers we will have our own set of bookmarks. There it was! For Xmarks, the absence of a checkmark in the profile means that the user should not have this folder, and the entrance to his hard work demolishes the folder in both browsers. And given that the default synchronization occurs when you close the browser, and when you open,
Way out. Having tried different methods, I came to the main conclusion - before work, you need to clean the surface with a file, i.e. bring both browsers to some initial state. Such preparation is caused by the peculiar logic of Xmarks, the inability to explicitly specify the root folder for the Fast Dial and for the elementary safety of data.
After these operations, you can turn on synchronization again, change bookmark collections separately for each machine, change settings, etc.

- First of all, on the Xmarks server, delete the Fast Dial folder (s)
- We create a temporary folder in bookmarks, where we copy bookmarks from the “Fast Dial” folder - in case Xmarks has not worked with it yet;
- Rename the “Fast Dial” folder, for example, “Fast Dail Home”;
- Copy bookmarks from the temporary folder into it (it’s better to leave the temporary folder until everything works for sure - you never know);
- Go to Xmarks and click on the “Sync” button, it’s her, not “Download” or “Send”;
- We go to the Xmarks server in the profile settings, click on the “Work” profile and uncheck the “Fast Dial Home” folder;
- We do the same on the second machine, respectively changing Home to Work and to turnover;
After these operations, you can turn on synchronization again, change bookmark collections separately for each machine, change settings, etc.
