Battle of the cyclops
In low light conditions, in a room closed from the press, an unscheduled meeting of six webcams took place. I invite everyone to familiarize themselves with the results of the meeting.
Attention! The post is charged by Alan Chumak :)

It just so happened that during the testing of the cameras in front of them, it was mainly me that appeared) so my face in this post is abundant. Be patient :)
They cannot but rejoice at the pace of development of network communication capabilities. More recently, in addition to the phone, we had no normal alternative to talk to someone from another point on the planet. But chatter chatter, but to see a distant interlocutor during a conversation is another. And if earlier only presidents and cosmonauts had the ability to video, now, in an era of rapidly falling traffic prices, we have the opportunity to communicate as much as you like and with anyone. It remains to determine the means of communication;).
Actually, all you need for a video call through the network is a fairly quick connection, a computer and a webcam. And if with the first two points everyone has purely individual solutions and approaches, then usually nobody seriously takes a choice of a webcam. And in vain, because the camera is different.
More recently, when I did not have a webcam (there was no need), I thought that these were ordinary cameras connected to a computer giving photo images close to photographic. As it soon turned out, this is not entirely true and one can hardly always believe in beautiful pictures from boxes and Internet sites.
Although I print fast enough, sometimes it happens that it’s much more correct to call to solve a question much faster. Well, or if it is not a matter of speed, but of emotion, then ICQ-mail is also not suitable. Constant questions “Is there a Skype with a camera?” I was forced to ask a solution to this question, which I, in fact, did.
Today, in my battered battlefield, there are six completely different webcams. They differ not only in appearance, but also in features, image quality, price, etc.
Why exactly these devices? So as not to say that the light converged in a wedge only on a loggia) In general, what was found was tested.
So, meet:
- Philips SPC620NC
- Philips SPC315NC
- Logitech QuickCam E2500
- Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro
- Labtec Webcam 1200
- Labtec Webcam 2200 I
get the units out of the boxes.
A camera with a 1.3 megapixel sensor (photo and video), capable of shooting video at a frequency of 30 frames per second.
Inside the box are:
- Philips SPC620NC webcam with a non-removable USB cable 1.5m long;
- Installation disk;
- Color U-turn manual with pictures in 6 languages (without Russian).
The camera rotates not just 360 degrees - even more (but already with the winding wire). The vertical angle of inclination is approximately 60 degrees.
A revolving ring with notches around the lens - for manual focus adjustment. Above is an unsigned snapshot button. Above is an orange-red indicator, bright enough.
Camera with microphone, mounted on a rubberized clothespin. The clothespin is opened 90 degrees. You can fix it only on a horizontal surface (on the monitor) and then, not very reliable. On the table is more confident.
If autorun of disks is not disabled, then when you insert a disk into the drive, software installation starts immediately, where the system language is already selected. If you wish, you can only install drivers (although, on Skype, everything worked without me), or additional help and software (Vlounge). The software version 1.0.0.75 is included in the package, although 1.0.0.79 is available on the site - there are absolutely no differences, but still without Russian.
I launch the program - it is rather slow. The entire program can be divided into 2 parts - upper and lower. The image from the camera is always displayed below, the settings above. At the top left there are 5 menu items - File , Edit , Preferences , Links , Help and 4 tabs - Capture , Communicate , Monitor and Broadcast .
Menu items can not be considered - standard printing operations, cutting-pasting, specifying the directory where everything will be saved ... and that’s it.
On the Capture tab, as you might have guessed, the image is being captured - a photo or video. The upper part displays what is already captured. Here you can make a slide show of the frames made, rotate them 90-180-270 degrees, print, send by mail or delete.
The second tab ( Communicate ) lists the supported communication programs - Skype, MSN, Yahoo, QQ and AIM. If this software is already installed, you can start it; otherwise, download.
The next tab on the list is Monitor .
By adjusting the sensitivity of the camera to movements, you can record either everything in a row, or only that stormy activity that the sensor will notice. By the way, he is very sensitive. At a distance of a meter, the camera turned on the recording, if I began to slowly cover my eyes
Also in the cell there is an opportunity to “follow” the person’s head. It looks something like this:
There is really nothing on the last tab - a couple of icons and a link to www.ww.com , through which you can make a simple broadcast. For an amateur.
The image is often quite dark and noisy (with high interpolated resolution). But for the same Skype - it is, for it is almost without delays (although in the dark they are palpable). The only thing that I could not do from the documented features was to replace the background. In theory, it should be like this - I chose a picture of Mars or the desert and the camera itself substitutes this in the background to deceive the interlocutor) But something none of the software versions provided me with such an opportunity, although it is mentioned on the box that it is.
I liked the detailed illustrated manual for the camera.
In the box was:
- Philips SPC315NC webcam ;
- headset;
- 7 manuals in 12 languages - there is no Russian, as always;
- A disk with drivers;
- Skype advertising and warranty.
The 0.1-megapixel camera (1.3MP with interpolation) is silver in color, with a long (2m) non-removable USB cable.
The camera cannot turn left and right - only up and down (about 70 degrees). If you lift the lens up as far as possible, you will not see the blue indicator, which is located immediately above the "eye". On the sides there are two buttons - a photo and something else) On the mounts - rubber inserts. You can fix it, but also very securely - rather, just “hang it”.
The camera is heavily recessed in the case, which immediately gives the thought that there will be no light, which means the image will be dark. And that’s what happened during the test - the default image is very dark and noisy. It’s a little possible to conjure with regular means, but you still can’t do “sweets” - everything is limited initially.
Headset Headphones are very reminiscent of headphones, but they aren’t quite at all - there is a left one, and instead of a right one there is a rubberized insert that provides the necessary friction against the ear) The
microphone rotates vertically by about 150 degrees, “in steps”, with a small step. Sound enough for chatting on Skype.
Regarding software - the same as in the previous case, except that now it has become possible to adjust the image quality in the manner described in the manual. But in return two whole tabs disappeared - Monitor and Broadcast.
A camera with a 0.3-megapixel matrix, which allows you to produce a 1.3-megapixel interpolated image.
Allows you to shoot video in resolution 640x480, 30 frames per second.
In the box:
- Logitech QuickCam E2500 webcam ;
- Black and white manual (150 pages) in 15 languages, including Russian;
- A disk with software;
- Warranty for 2 years.
The camera is round, the lens is deeply hidden. The USB cable extends to 1.8m.
The shooting button is located on the back (which makes it almost not pressed, especially if the camera is installed “in a pose” on the table); just above the button is a microphone.
Immediately above the lens is a bright green LED and the company logo (where would it be without it). The ring around the lens - to adjust the focus.
The "Eye" is very dodgy - it rotates 360 degrees horizontally, while you can rotate up and down about 60 degrees.
The installation is very original, there is no Russian language (even in the era of colliders, finding out about the existence of the largest (by area and ambition) state is quite difficult).
You can put only firewood or firewood and software.
After installation, a window for help appears in which they can teach you how to use the camera. For the sake of interest, I clicked on one of the items - I threw it to the site where detailed videos are recorded . Yes, with such support, my grandmother would have mastered the webcam).
I launch the software - a very small vertical control panel appears, which, if desired, can be further reduced.
It is possible to shoot videos directly on youtube. I liked that through the program you can turn off either the sound from the camera or the image, leaving the sound. Or disable both this and that, displaying instead of yourself various photos, the assortment of which can be set in the settings (Privacy Shade).
There are 10 different effects that can distort the already not the best picture. What for? Apparently, all kinds of paranoids wanted this) However, sometimes there are funny moments. I liked the effect of "aging" the image ... well, and "I see a ghost." Low Light Boost and Color Boost
Settingsslightly improve the quality of the picture, but still it is far from perfect.
Initially, the image is in white, a bit noisy. There is a delay, and palpable - by opening your eyes, you can for a moment see yourself with your eyes closed.
The image can be mirrored both vertically (if the camera hangs “upside down”) and horizontally (for those who are accustomed to seeing themselves in ordinary mirror reflection)
As I said, using the button on the camera you can take pictures - I was pleasantly surprised by the “rate of fire”.
In the box you can find:
- Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro webcam ;
- Black-green manual (70 pages) in 16 languages;
- Warranty for 2 years.
Two-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and chic autofocus.
Appearance is very unusual. The large microphone on the right has a spherical shape and transmits excellent sound quality to the interlocutor. Around the lens is a metal ring, which gives glare in bright light.
The camera can not only be attached to the monitor, but also put in several ways on the table - the design is very stable. True, there are very few degrees of freedom at the “head” - 60 degrees up and down, that's all.
To the left of the lens is an unsigned button for taking pictures. To the right of the lens is an “under chrome” insert with a logo around which the ring glows in pleasant white. Very so unobtrusive (only in active mode), it doesn’t come out brightly and beautifully.
The USB cable is also non-removable, length - 1.8m.
It's a pity, but this camera is only for the lucky owners of Macs - there are no drivers for Windows. However, you can find a way out of this situation - install the drivers from the QuickCam Pro 9000 camera (in appearance it is exactly the same) - 28.5 megs (only XP and Vista) and it will work. True, with this solution to the problem, many camera settings will remain unavailable, but without them you can work comfortably.
There is no countdown in software when you shoot a video with a time limit (for example, 30 seconds). Also, it personally caused me some inconvenience that the photos are numbered as follows: I made, for example, three frames - 1, 2, 3. If you move them to another folder, then continue in their place instead of pictures 4, 5, 6 ... Pictures with numbers 1, 2, 3 will be created.
Do not count, but as always ... there is almost nothing to complain about. Excellent video quality - color reproduction, minimal noise even in low light; there are almost no delays, everything is in focus. A couple of photos (in different lighting conditions) in NOT-maximum quality (960 × 720):
If you bring a book to the camera, then at that “end of the wire” you can read it if you want :)
The only device to which Skype responded to the image with Skype “Wow, what kind of camera?”. Well, I also understood a lot, looking at the “images” from the cameras of the interlocutors.
Video example:
It is quite simple, but at the same time, it has almost everything you need. With all this, such an important detail as ease of use has been preserved.
So, after starting the program, it is a small panel with one button - for working with photos and videos. The socket can be expanded by clicking on the triangle below - the settings and help buttons will appear.
The settings are very diverse, but vary depending on which camera is connected. Depending on the same, the appearance of the main panel also changes - new buttons can be added, such as effects.
The window for working with photos and videos is terribly primitive - the place where the image is displayed, below are two tabs (oddly enough, this photo and video). When you click on the first, oddly enough, a place appears with all the photos taken. When you click on the second, oddly enough ... yes, yes, the captured video. Double-click allows you to view these files in associated programs. Pictures can be sent by mail, printed, deleted. There are a couple of settings, such as time stamps, photo-video quality, time delays, etc.
In the boxes - by camera, disk with firewood, software and instructions, 2-year warranty.
You can describe these two cameras as one, because they practically do not differ (in appearance - only in color). And to me personally, black-red color is more pleasant) Strange, I thought that since black color means everything is more serious and the model is older, but no - model 1200 is black, blue is 2200.
The most “free” cameras are due to the hinged mechanism, we have the ability to rotate 360 degrees around its axis and a good deviation up and down.
And due to the fact that the camera mount itself is held in the slots of the stand, we can still move the camera back and forth. At the top of the camera is a button for creating photos, under it (above the lens) is a small LED (green, not very bright). Around the "eye" - a ring for focusing. The 2200 camera has a built-in microphone, in 1200 it is not.
Build quality? Very good, but personally I am not a fan of half-millimeter distances between the parts of the case (this is not a marriage, it’s so conceived). And yet, everything is very good - without burrs, squeaks and other defects. On the sides of the chamber there are pleasant oblong embossed inserts.
Drivers weigh about 7 mb. Russian language what? That's right, either. Install, connect the camera, start. The intuitive software interface does not stand out. A window appears with an image (640x480).
It is not very good in quality - yellow-green colors prevail, a little noise and some strange vertical stripes (no, they are barely visible. But they are visible). The image itself is quite clear (if you twist the focus ring).

In the presence of dozens of different effects, very interesting come across.
What is interesting - webcams earned in the program from Philips (Vlounge).
Having tested all these cameras, I came to the conclusion that not a single camera will give a photographic image, which we would like to see and which we “mentally” mean. No one gets 10 out of 10 points :) Therefore, keep this in mind in advance so as not to be disappointed later. On the other hand, I don’t understand - now almost all phones have cameras (as an option), and the images from them are very good. And the webcam is a device designed for one purpose only ...
The only camera that met my expectations from this type of device was Logitech QuickCam Vision Pro - the image is always clear, color reproduction at a high level, and delays are minimal. If she had the ability to turn left and right, full-fledged work in Windows (although I'm sure it is in the QuickCam Pro 9000 camera) and an adequate price would be 10 points.
All other cameras have these or those defects - noise, delays, image darkness.
Despite such conclusions - any of these cameras (except, perhaps, the Labtec Webcam 1200 - it is without a microphone) is suitable for video chatting on Skype and similar systems. Connection, setup - even a novice computer user will cope with all this. So, if you plan to see the interlocutor, you will see him)
