Gmail mail crash resolved

Today, from 12:30 Moscow time for about 2 and a half hours, many private and corporate users of the Gmail service around the world could not access their mailboxes.

We want to inform you that the problem has been resolved, and apologize for the inconvenience. We have made every effort to restore access to the service as quickly as possible, and now we are carefully studying the causes of the problem.

Perhaps when you try to access you will be asked to enter the characters shown on the screen (the so-called CAPTCHA) in order to make sure that you are the owner of the mailbox. Such a request always occurs when you make repeated attempts to enter your account for a short time.

We are extremely upset by what happened, but we would like to emphasize that such situations are extremely rare - we realize that many people rely on Gmail every day in their work and not only.

Thank you for understanding.

Update:

Many of you have asked about the reasons for the failure of Gmail, and now we want to share this information. The fact is that yesterday morning in one of our European data centers planned preventive work was carried out. Usually, in this case, account maintenance is simply transferred to another center, and there are no failures. However, this time, the side effects of the code that “binds” the data to the geographical location of its owner, provoked an overload of another European data center, which, in turn, led to the domino effect. It took us about an hour to regain control of the situation. We apologize again
