UIQ officially filed for bankruptcy.

imageFrom the moment Sony Ericsson announced that it would use Windows Mobile on its flagship Xperia, the fate of UIQ hung in the balance. Now, almost a year later, the inevitable happened - UIQ Technology filed for bankruptcy. This action finally kills any hope that Sony Ericsson will decide to revive its S-series using this platform.

Also, the fact that Nokia completed the acquisition of Symbian Limited in order to turn the popular platform into an open system played a role in the demise of UIQ. The new Symbian will combine the elements of UIQ, S60 and a specially developed MOAP platform for DoCoMo mobile applications. The first phones based on the new Symbian will not be available until 2010.

Let me remind you that the main consumers of UIQ Technology products were Motorola and Sony Ericsson. After the bankruptcy of UIQ Technology, the promotion of S60 platforms remained the sole property of Nokia, as the third UI developer for Symbian, MOAP, specializes exclusively in orders from the Japanese company NTT DoCoMo.
