Continuing the topic of free software, I would like to talk about Sun Microsystems products - OpenOffice.org (the Russian version is available at en.openoffice.org)
This is a package of office applications similar to those provided by MS Office, but O.O. (Open Office) is that this program is absolutely free.
So the package consists of the following programs:
* Writer (Text Editor);
* Impress (Presentation Editor);
* Calc (Table Editor);
* Base (Database Editor);
* Math (Formula Editor);
* Draw
Writer, Impress, Calc and Base, as you can easily see, have direct counterparts in the MS Office package, their interface largely coincides with the interface of the 2003 office, which cannot but rejoice the end user who "grew up" on Microsoft products =).
Of course, with a strong external resemblance, there are some differences, but they more often relate to details, we can definitely say only that if you have a desire and 20 minutes of free time, you can easily deal with most of O.O.'s functions without any difficulty, and this is undoubted plus to the Open Source piggy bank, if you can’t figure it out intuitively, then “F1 ″ =) is at your service. The help for the product is extensive and quite capacious, which allows you to find understandable information on issues of interest to you, many thanks to the developers.
At the same time, it does not do without minuses, for example, the Impress editor did not personally impress me; for the time being, it clearly loses PowerPoint both in terms of its set of built-in styles and the convenience of placing text on slides.
So, is OpenOffice.org a worthy competitor to MS Office?
Undoubtedly!
Of course, in many positions he lags behind Leader, but Sun is a company with great potential, and I’m sure that in a few years it will be able to compete with Microsoft, and we, the end users, just need it. =)
