Crowdsourcing in astronomy: classification of galaxies

    Astronomical observatories generate terabytes of information every day with which there is no time to understand. The Galaxy Zoo project invites everyone to take part in the visual classification of galaxy images obtained as part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey project .

    In general, the idea is simple - you need to take the picture to one of the classes of the Hubble sequence :



    As it turned out, random users cope with the classification no worse than professionals, so with the efforts of ~ 100,000 project participants managed to get scientifically significant results.
