Comparison of console torrent rocking chairs with a web face (part 1)

Recently, an "extra" computer appeared, which it wanted to use as a rocking chair for files from the Internet, and a test lab. And I faced the problem of choosing a torrent rocking chair that does not require X (X server). From the requirements it was necessary:

    1. the most important thing is the availability of a convenient web gui (not one I will use my server)
    2. to not be banned by servers - yes, there are some :)
    3. convenient, with the ability to work in daemon mode
    4. stable!

Well, in principle there are few requirements, the most important thing is the web face. A little googling, I found the following:
    1. Transmission   http://www.transmissionbt.com/
    2. ctorrent http://ctorrent.sourceforge.net/
    3. rtorrent http://libtorrent.rakshasa.no/
    4. BTG http://btg.berlios.de/
    5. TorrentFlux http://www.torrentflux.com/

Now let's get into more detail with each.

    1. Let's start with Transmission. This is an independent development, based on its library, it has assemblies for Mac OS X, and Linux itself on GTK +.

Transmission is written in C. It can work in daemon mode, which was exactly what I needed;). You can control it using the utility of the transmission-remote that goes with it. The daemon features are pretty simple:
    • add / remove torrent
    • setting speed limits
    • torrent management, start / stop
    • check data
    • change port
    • change proxy server settings

For him, he found only one web face called Clutch . Installing it requires installed PHP 5, with socket support. Installation is quite simple, put it in the server folder, changed the rights to the Transmission socket, went to the server and voila, it worked. The possibilities are not great, as can be seen from the screenshot, you can add / remove a torrent file, pause it, run individual torrents, limit the speed, and view information about the torrent file. A big plus is that everything is written in JavaScript, so you do not need to overload the page;) it is very convenient. Although functional and small, it is almost always enough. Pros of Transmission + Clutch:

    • comfortable
    • not overloaded with features
    • great shakes
    • web muzzle completely in JavaScript (maybe minus)
    • does not lose torrents during sudden reboots, very stable

    Minuses:
    • makes data verification for a long time
    • Sometimes it doesn’t download for reasons unknown to me (like there are siders, and the tracker responds, but the download rate does not increase :()

Well, in general, a good client for a separate swing, which does not require more functionality.

Well, this is the first part of the review;;) Next time I’ll talk about another client.

PS I myself just use this bunch of Transmission 1.10 + Clutch. Next week, if I like this one, I’ll write about other rockers.
