BitTorrent still dominates global traffic
The analytical company Ipoque has published the latest information on the distribution of traffic on the world Internet for 2007. Preliminary results showed that the proportion of P2P in the load on communication channels is, depending on the time of day, from 50% (during the day) to 90% (at night). This is much more than a year ago, when the share of P2P was 30% and 70% , respectively.
Last year, BitTorrent overtook eDonkey as the most popular P2P network, and in total these two networks control more than 95% of all P2P traffic. The share of different protocols varies greatly from country to country: for example, exotic DirectConnect is very popular in the Baltic states (about 30%). However, BitTorrent everywhere ranks first with an indicator of 50% -75%, while eDonkey - from 5% to 50%.
The growth of P2P is explained by the fact that many popular new generation applications, such as Joost and Skype, are based on this platform. For example, the same Skype already generates 2% of world traffic.
Last year’s statistics for Germany shows which content is most popular on file-sharing networks: music (22.3%), movies (21.24%) and porn (15.04%).
