Google story. The book about the main thing

A week ago, I bought David Wise’s book “Google. A breakthrough in the spirit of the times ”about the history of the IT giant, the Google search engine. I read quickly and with interest.

The book of 26 chapters tells about the development and formation of the company in chronological order: from the problem of finding information on the Web, the idea of creating a new search system, and going to the IPO and plans for the future of the founders of the company (Larry Page and Sergey Brin). By the way, Brin - was born in the Soviet Union.
The preface to the Russian edition was written by V. Dolgov, director of the Russian representative office of Google, in which he talks more about the power of the giant than about the usefulness of the book. Mr. Dolgov also writes that it will be possible to learn from the book the reasons and features of such a large-scale development of the company. Exaggerates a bit. You can learn a lot, but not the main thing. which allowed the search engine to take over the world, including China, where the situation with censorship and the Internet in general is far from simple.

It’s worth reading a book. Even because it serves as a tool for a specialist in any field of business to conduct their own business in an extraordinary way, which brings profit and, most importantly, customers.

Each chapter of the book is not only a stage of Google’s development, but also a new idea that you can apply in your company. I really liked the idea of a letter to “friends of Google”, which was sent out by the founders every time something significant happened. True, on 368 pages I still could not find the answer, who are these very friends. An important thought passes through the whole book - Google was the first to do nothing, the company only created more advanced products that satisfied consumers as much as possible (a contradiction to Trout theory) and thereby made them brand followers.

The book has a lot of useful information for leaders of the organization who can gain knowledge about building a corporate culture and motivation systems. I was pleased with the 20% rule at Google, which allows employees to spend 1 day a week developing their own ideas. Thanks to this, many projects have been created that are now actively used by Google visitors. An example is Froogle.com (Yandex.Market became an analogue in Russia).
The book has a lot of interesting things. Just do not list. If you read, you will find out about the problems that Larry and Sergey had at the initial stage, about their studies at Stanford, about financial success, getting an IPO, the fight and the confrontation with Microsoft, Yahoo! and other companies and the current state of affairs.

Of course, there was a fly in the ointment in the book. I did not like the fact that Wise (the author of the book) in each paragraph speaks of the superiority of Google, its uniqueness, success and other similar things. The text has too many repetitions. And for me, chapter 18 “Charlie's”, which tells about the chef, became incomprehensible. Why write 15 pages about the kitchen.

In my opinion, little attention is paid to the launch of Gmail. The author focuses solely on litigation related to the release of the mail service, but does not at all mention the unique marketing move, which allowed Gmail to become the most popular free email service.

If you decide to open new projects or a company, but I recommend reading this book. The success of others will set in a positive mood, and will also give strength to the creation of good.
