What are open source funds doing - talking about recent OpenStack and Linux Foundation projects

We decided to talk about the projects (Kata Containers, Zuul, FATE and CommunityBridge) that recently joined the two large funds, and about the direction in which they are developing. Photos - Alex Holyoake - Unsplash

How are things with the OpenStack Foundation

The OpenStack Foundation (OSF) was founded in 2012 to support the development of the OpenStack open cloud platform. And the organization quickly “overgrown” with its community. To date, the OpenStack Foundation has over 500 members. Among them are telecoms, cloud providers, hardware manufacturers, and even a domain name registrar.

For a long time, the OpenStack Foundation was engaged in the development of its eponymous project. But at the beginning of the year, the fund changed its vector . The organization began supporting projects related to machine learning, CI / CD, peripheral computing, and containerization.

In this regard, several new projects joined the fund.

What kind of projects. At an Open Infrastructure Summit conference in May, OSF representatives spoke about the first “newcomers” —these were Kata Containers and Zuul .

The first project is developing secure virtual machines whose performance is comparable to that of Kubernetes and Docker containers. VMs are loaded at a speed not exceeding 100 ms, so they will find application in the cloud for deploying computing resources on the fly. By the way, several large IaaS providers are already taking part in the development of Kata.

The second project, Zuul, is a CI / CD system. It conducts parallel testing of code modifications and prevents potential crashes.

The prospects of the fund. The OpenStack Foundation says that by changing the direction of development, they will be able to strengthen the community with talented developers. However, not everyone thinks so - at the May conference, Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth called the expansion of the fund's portfolio a “mistake." In his opinion, the OpenStack Foundation uses resources inefficiently, which will ultimately affect the quality of their main product - the OpenStack cloud platform. Whether this will be so remains to be seen in the future.

    What the Linux Foundation does

The foundation is engaged in the promotion and standardization of Linux, as well as the development of the open source software ecosystem as a whole. The fund's portfolio is regularly updated with new projects - some of them appeared literally this week.

What kind of projects. On June 25, the FATE framework became part of the Linux Foundation . It was transferred to the open source Chinese bank WeBank and Tencent. The goal of the new solution is to help companies develop secure artificial intelligence systems that meet GDPR requirements. It includes tools for implementing deep learning methods, logistic regression and “ transfer learning"(In this case, an already trained model is used, adapted to solve other problems). The source code for the project can be found on GitHub .

Also at the beginning of the year, the Linux Foundation announced the CommunityBridge platform. It acts as a kind of bridge between developers and investors who are ready to sponsor open projects. The platform should help attract new developers to open source.

Despite this, she was already criticized. Industry experts point outthat the Linux Foundation will provide only minimal financial services, and issues such as contracting and licensing are left overboard. Perhaps in the future, the functionality of CommunityBridge will be expanded.

The prospects of the fund. Late last year, the Linux Foundation established two new foundations for GraphQL and Ceph . The organization plans to continue the development of the open source software ecosystem.

For example, the Linux Foundation and Facebook are planningopen a new fund dedicated to the osquery project. Osquery is an operating system monitoring framework used by social network developers, as well as Airbnb, Netflix, and Uber. The tool allows you to optimize the process of obtaining data about running processes, loaded kernel modules, and network connections.

It can be expected that in the near future the Linux Foundation will again expand its portfolio. Perhaps they are waiting for the fate of the successful Cloud Native Computing Foundation, from which Kubernetes and CoreDNS came out. Or maybe they will follow in the footsteps of the Tizen fund, whose prospects remain unclear due to the unpopularity of the operating system of the same name.

Both foundations - the OpenStack Foundation and the Linux Foundation - are actively developing their own projects. We will continue to monitor their most interesting “acquisitions.” We will talk about some of them in the following materials.
