The list of the hundred most popular scientific articles for 2015 is released, according to Altmetric statistics
Altmetric.com has released an annual list of the hundred most popular articles this year (it can be called an analogue of the impact factor of scientific journals and citation of scientific articles, not only measured in the ecosystem of scientific sources, but in mass online sources: news sites, blogs, social. networks, and even Wikipedia). The same list was published last year , when the article in the field of psychology and cognitive sciences, entitled "Experimental evidence of massive-scale emotional contagion through social networks", became the article of the year. This time, this is an article about a new antibiotic known to all of you from the publication in Geektimes .
The most popular (top ten) were: 1) an article on a new antibiotic, 2) on the prevailing opinion among the inhabitants about the relationship between autism and vaccination, 3) on the modern extinction of species caused by the human factor, 4) on the etiology of cancer, 5) on the reproducibility of psychological research (see Geektimes The results of many studies in psychology and sociology are not reproducible and could be faked ), 6) pollution of the oceans with plastic waste, 7) global warming and mining, 8) comparison of Microsoft Word and L aTeX in the work of a scientist, 9) on a new neural network that allows to achieve high-quality images, "drawn by a computer", 10) and finally, on the negative correlation between religiosity and altruism in children around the world.
Nature Magazineout of 100 articles I selected work on a program with which you can create computer-created pictures (9th place), a publication on a program that skillfully plays poker with people (35th place), global warming (7th place), and finally a study in which "kissing microbiomes", bacteria transmitted at the moment when the lovers kiss (16th place), were studied.
According to Altmetric itself, 42% of articles were published under the so-called. gold open access license (the type of access to articles in a scientific journal, when open access to some of the materials, as a rule, of the newest, is presented by subscription, the rest, which came out earlier, are available for free), mainly the authors of articles were from the USA and Great Britain 65 articles from the United States, and 31 articles from the United Kingdom), in total, all articles were mentioned in over 5,000 news stories, 93,000 tweets, and Wikipedia mentioned more than 300 times. In addition, research in the field of medicine, as before, prevails in the top, although at the same time more work is paid to the work in the field of climate and the environment, judging by the indicators of popularity.
Science magazine also cites some figures from this top: the total citation of the top articles was 112,492 times, the works were published in 34 scientific journals, the authors of the research come from 105 countries (!), including working together in 52 international collaborations ( more here ).
One of the authors (Brian Conlon) of the first-place article admits that they did not quite expect such noise in the media about their discovery, for example, to see a photograph of bacterial culture on the evening news on the CBS channel - an unusual experience for him.
Altmetric.com was created in 2011 , and has since been used by various global top magazines, researchers, and institutions.
