[Testing] Kingston DataTraveler micro 3.1 USB drive 32 gigabytes

Hello Giktayms! The USB 3.1 standard follows the same path as its closest relative - USB 3.0. Slowly, without unnecessary harsh attacks on the market, it simply enters our lives and once, looking at the storefront, we will not see there drives of a different standard. In the meantime, each flash drive becomes a kind of curiosity and attracts the attention of experts and customers. The Kingston assortment already has a USB 3.1 drive with two interfaces - now it is the turn of a compact solution in a metal case. Under a cat the overview of possibilities of Kingston DataTraveler Micro 3.1 . Yandex.Market says that you can purchase such a drive a little more than one thousand rubles. The price starts from 887 rubles

, with an average price of 1017 rubles. It is more expensive than similar USB 2.0 drives, and is quite comparable in price to regular USB 3.0 flash drives.

Kingston DataTraveler Micro 3.1 is packaged in a cardboard blister, an absolutely standard form of delivery for USB drives. In addition to the device itself, there are no additional bonuses inside.

The flash drive is very small with a metal robust case, which involves wearing it along with the keys on a metal ring. It’s both convenient and reliable - it won’t get lost in your pocket.

The following features are announced for Kingston DataTraveler Micro 3.1 :
    • Drive capacity: 16, 32 or 64 gigabytes
    • Standards Support: USB 2.0, 3.0, 3.1
    • Read speed: up to 100 MB / s
    • Write speed: up to 10 MB / s (for 16 GB), up to 15 MB / s (for 32 and 64 GB)
    • Warranty period: 5 years
    • Compatible OS: Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista; Mac OS X Linux Chrome OS

In terms of performance, the flash drive does not differ from the “dual-standard” Kingston microDuo3C.

    Test stand

    • Processor: Intel Core i7-5960X
    • Motherboard: GIGABYTE X99-SOC Champion
    • RAM: Kingston HyperX Predator DDR4-3000 4 * 4 Gb
    • System SSD: HyperX Predator PCI-E SSD 480 Gb
    • Video Card: AMD Fury X
    • Power Supply: Corsair AX1200i, 1200W
    • Operating System: Windows 10 Professional (64-bit)

The actual disk capacity is 31,456,952,320 bytes, which, when recalculated, gives about 29.2 gigabytes. The drive uses Toshiba TLC memory and the Phison PS2307 controller, which is used in many USB flash drives that Kingston makes.

    A set of test applications:

    • ATTO disk benchmark 2.4.7
    • Crystal Disk Mark 4.0.3
    • Teracopy

    ATTO disk benchmark 2.4.7

A synthetic test to assess the correctness of the manufacturer's stated speeds. Actually, most of the data indicated on the boxes of flash drives and SSDs of different manufacturers was obtained using ATTO Disk Benchmark. Judging by the data, the flash drive’s speed potential is very decent.

    Crystal Disk Mark 4.0.3

This test allows you to evaluate the operation of the drive in four modes: linear read / write, read / write blocks in 4K, linear read / write with 32 queue depth, read / write blocks in 4K with 32 command queue depth. It is clearly seen that the recording speed significantly exceeds the declared characteristics in the presence of a recording queue.

    Teracopy

To evaluate the most real performance, I recorded the film The Hobbit on a BDRemux flash drive. Battle Of Five Armies (file size 28 851 025 kilobytes) and fixed the time during which the movie is copied to the drive. Compared to Kingston microDuo 3C, copy time is half as much.

    Final thoughts

Not the fastest, but perhaps the smallest and most persistent flash drive of those who were in my hands. The key factor limiting the speed is heat dissipation, and you can only wait and hope that soon the controllers will be able to work at higher speeds while maintaining the same dimensions of the device. The convenience of such drives is difficult to overestimate, always with you, the cap is not lost, it works quickly.
