The most “leaky” operating systems and applications of 2014

Based on information from the National Vulnerability Database (NVD), GFI Software compiled a list of operating systems and software applications for which the largest number of vulnerabilities were recorded in 2014.

In total, last year 7038 new vulnerabilities were added to the database, that is, it was replenished by about 19 bugs per day. This is significantly more than in the previous year, and the uptrend is observed for the third year in a row.

24% of registered bugs are assigned a high degree of danger. This is less than in 2013, but de facto the number of dangerous vulnerabilities has increased in absolute numbers.

The largest number of “holes” is accounted for by third-party software applications (83%). The share of operating systems is only 14%. Another 4% is found in hardware devices.

Oddly enough, among the operating systems, the most vulnerabilities were found in Apple Mac OS X. Apple iOS ranks second in terms of leakage.

PS Apple fans dissatisfied with such results pay attention that the drafters of the rating for some reason did not include Android in it, and so he would probably have taken 1st place. In addition, bugs in different versions of Windows were divided into different categories, and bugs in different versions of OS X were summarized together. Allegedly, the authors of the rating skillfully manipulated the facts.
