Think the new auto parking calling feature is great? Well, CEO Elon Musk says this is just the beginning. In a telephone conversation with reporters today, Musk repeated his prediction that fully autonomous Tesla will appear within two years, noting that “Summon is just a small step to this.”

Elon Musk:
Ultimately, it will be possible to call your car from anywhere ... she can get to you herself. I think that in a couple of years you will be able to call your car across the country - from New York to LA.
The car will find you wherever your phone is ... and it will automatically charge itself throughout the journey.

The CEO noted that the current prototype robotic charging ( Snake ) or its improved version will soon be mounted at the company's supercharging stations. Musk later admitted that his predictions were "perhaps a little optimistic" and explained that a complete autonomous driving would require more than just updating the software on the existing Model S and Model X series:

We need more sensors to do this. More redundancy is needed ... more cameras, radars, power rails for them ... because in the car, any system can fail and in this case it will not have driver safety insurance.

This means that Tesla now being sold may not be fully autonomous in the full sense for two years, but Musk thinks that the necessary technologies will be completely ready for this time. As he remarked to reporters:
“In this period - from 24 to 36 months, Tesla will be able to manage himself on almost all roads, doing this with a level of safety far exceeding human capabilities.”
