Building 3D printer for modern technology college

    Hello! We talk about the commissioning of a 3D construction printer at the College of Modern Technologies named after the hero of the Soviet Union M.F. Panov. This is a construction college that trains specialists in this field and participates in the WorldSkills Russia Championship in Moscow.

    What a 3D printer

    This is the second Spetsavia construction printer purchased by the college for 3D printing with concrete. Previous sent to the landfill to work. This is a modification of the model S-2020, it was made to order and came unassembled.

    The printer differs from the standard model in frame size and print area.

    Specifications:

    • Working area: 2500 x 1500 x 800 mm.
    • External dimensions: 3000 x 2000 x 2100 mm.
    • Drive: stepper motors with spur gears.
    • Type of supply of the printing head: shnekovy.
    • Layer: 10-15 x 30-40 mm.
    • Capacity: up to 0.5 cubic meters per hour.
    • Material: cement formulations with or without antifreeze and plasticizing agents, gypsum mixtures, including moisture resistant and hardened.
    • Net weight: 560 kg.
    • Gross weight: 960 kg.
    • Power supply: 220V, 50 Hz, 1600 watts.
    • Service conditions: indoors, from 5 to 40 ° C, humidity of air no more than 60%.

    You can familiarize yourself with modifications of Speczavia’s AMT printers and buy a 3D construction printer at Top 3D Shop.

    Serial S-2020 are delivered assembled in a caravan.

    This printer came in six boxes. Unload and transfer them to two people.

    Separate components weigh 200 kg, for their unloading needed a lift.

    Build a 3D printer

    The frame of the printer consists of several components.

    The guide along the vertical axis is mounted on a two hundred kilogram axis, and a bunker-extruder for the solution is installed on it.

    The funnel bunker into which the mixture is loaded. Inside, the screw extrudes the solution by rotation.

    The sides of the base are the main bearing elements, each weighing 80 kg.

    We connect sidewalls with three rectangular pipes.

    Hung axis, it is located on the stepper motors. Movement is carried out by means of a linear gear train. Then secured the yellow metal panel.

    The detail on the floor is the frame of the guides along the Z axis.

    They hanged a guide and attached a chain, the transmission force from the stepper motor to move the bunker vertically.

    We hung a bunker with a screw and plugged the power cable.

    It takes about 6 hours and two employees to fully assemble the printer.

    Software, project preparation

    The printer works with the program Mach3, prints from files .dxf and .dvg. You can upload any g-code to it. File preparation is done in the Sheetcam program. You can use project files from AutoCAD.

    Print

    The concrete mix is extruded with a special design extruder. It is laid in layers, like plastic in a household 3D-printer.

    College students knead the solution and load into the bunker.

    One operator is enough for printing on the printer, it can load the mixture into the bunker manually or with the help of a special loader.

    The mixture is fed by a rotating screw, as in a meat grinder. The speed of the engine auger is configured in the program. Concrete is loaded into the bunker, then it needs to be degassed for a while, rammed a little and can be printed.

    What is a 3D printer used for?

    The printer is used to study the methods of working with 3D printing in construction. Used for printing small architectural forms - benches, pedestals, relief elements.

    Details near the printer - part of the shop. And this is how it looks in its entirety.

    There are other options for execution.

    And, of course, not only shops.

    The printer can also create monolithic structures, but it is more efficient to print the outer walls, the space inside which can be filled with a solution or filled with a heat insulator.

    Another example of application: in Artyomovsky, near Yekaterinburg, the printer Spetsavia printed a copy of one of the towers of Winterfell Castle from Game of Thrones.

    The tower was printed on the territory of the local concrete plant and is intended for a guard post.

    Advantages and disadvantages

    Pros:

    • Irreplaceable visual aid;
    • You can print small architectural forms for practical use;
    • Easy to install, easy to set up, easy to print;
    • Cheaper than imported counterparts;
    • Warranty domestic manufacturer.

    Minuses

    • Special equipment is needed to unload the printer and at least two people to install it;
    • Need a separate room;
    • After printing is complete, you must wait until the print hardens before it can be removed from the work area.

    Total

    The use of 3D printing in construction, although it is still new, has already declared itself - many things are, indeed, much easier, faster and cheaper to print than to design and make formwork for their pouring.

    The media is full of practical application cases, educational institutions train specialists, printer manufacturers increase the assortment - we see that this is not a fashionable trend, but a logical continuation of the development of building technologies.

    And in this area, as in others, the one who starts using it earlier will receive the maximum benefits from the new technology.
