Webair's NY1 data center: one of the most reliable Tier III data centers in the United States (feature overview + photos)

    KingServers began working with a new partner - the American company Webair, which specializes in providing managed hosting services. Some of our equipment will be located in the Tier III certified NY1 data center. This DC is located in New York, next to the Long Island Railway Station.

    In this article we would like to state the reasons that prompted us to work with Webair, and, in particular, choose this particular data center, built in 2011. Webair is constantly expanding the capabilities of its DC, in particular, recently the cooling infrastructure has been updated in this data center (a “hot corridor” type scheme has been added), equipment has been updated. As a result, DC has become more productive, plus energy efficient. In continuation - the main current characteristics of the data center NY1.

    Key Features

    • NY1 data center certified to Tier III, SAS SSAE16 and HIPAA standards;
    • Type N + 1 redundancy (in some elements of the N + 2 infrastructure) for cooling systems, power systems, network infrastructure;
    • Lack of binding from any telecom operators, with a wide selection of entry points and available networks that can withstand very high loads;
    • As a result - direct and operator-independent switching through the MMR traffic exchange node with various providers, including Level3, Global Crossings, AboveNet, Lighttower, XO Communications and Verizon
    • The total area of the working space is 4650 m2.

    Energy Infrastructure Characteristics

    • 4 MW - direct power supply to the data center, two transformers;
    • 1 MW - a spare power system with 2 redundant parallel generators, the fuel supply for which is enough for 2 weeks of uninterrupted operation of the data center;
    • Redundant UPS and PDU for each of the racks (A / B power);

    • Two standby DC power stations;
    • Flexible power supply systems for customers, with circuits 120V, 208V, 3PH, 20 A, 30 A, 50 A and above;
    • Ability to add additional power schemes;
    • DCIM-systems with integration into DC energy infrastructure.

    Network Infrastructure and Connectivity

    The company has data centers in New York (it is discussed in this article), Amsterdam, Montreal and Los Angeles. Thanks to this, company customers receive multiple reservations, plus the ability to manage traffic flows for critical projects.

    In particular, Webair has a “dark fiber optic ring” with outputs to:

    • 111 Eighth Ave., New York, NY
    • 60 Hudson St., New York, NY
    • 32 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY
    • 470 Vanderbilt Ave., Brooklyn, NY
    • 501 Franklin Ave., Garden City, NY
    • 165 Halsey St., Newark, NJ
    • Gyroscoopweg 2E & 2F and NIKHEF, Kruislaan 409, 1098 SJ, Amsterdam, NL

    At these points of presence, clients can connect to more than 1000 different networks, which allows you to add additional network resources if necessary.

    The equipment here is installed DWDM / CDWM from Transmode and Cube Optics AG.

    Specifications:
    • Access to various Tier 1 providers;
    • Plurality of POE;
    • Access to the "dark fiber" of Manhattan;
    • “Ring of Dark Optical Fiber” of New York's major PoPs;
    • Dual 1 / 10Gbps + BGP;
    • A team of engineers to support the architectural solutions of DC.

    Cooling

    • N + 2 scheme using 10-20 ton CRAC units;
    • Each unit is independent, the network can be called distributed;
    • Hot corridors, lack of third-party equipment in the underground space;
    • Integration of the cooling system with DCIM-systems, with real-time monitoring of PUE;
    • Monitoring critical HVAC systems.

    Support

    Qualified team working 24/7/365. Team specialists can work with all types of popular models of equipment and software that is used in DC. If necessary, remote support is possible.

    Safety system

    • Biometric pass system for employees and customers;
    • Security system audited in accordance with SSAE16 SOC 1 TYPE II;
    • Video recording from cameras 24 hours a day, archive storage for 90 days;

    • Identification and verification of customers 24/7;
    • Card access system both in the building, and to specific racks;

    Zoning of critical sections of DC with access denied;

    • DDoS protection;
    • VESDA fire system for every infrastructure and critical site;
    • An Inergen gas system has been installed that can extinguish a fire without damaging equipment;
    • Equipping each CRAC unit with its own fire safety module with connection to a common VESDA system.

    Conclusion

    The data center NY1 is one of the most promising at the moment. This DC is located in the USA, New York, in a place where there is very good connectivity. Moreover, the connectivity is very high both for America and for Europe with Asia.

    Plus, the reliability of the infrastructure and the capabilities of this DC are very high. Such a service is difficult to obtain in domestic data centers, even with overpayments several times.
