What are the results of a survey of British firms on new gTLDs talking about?

Nominet, the administrator of the UK .UK national domain, conducted a survey among 530 companies on the introduction of new top-level domains. The respondents included the most famous UK companies engaged in both large and medium and small businesses, and having their own website on the Internet.

As it turned out, 41% of organizations do not know anything about the program of new top-level domains, despite the fact that ICANN has already accepted more than 1900 applications for new gTLDs, and the first top-level domains registered under these applications will work next year. Interestingly, this figure almost coincided with a survey among Austrian companies - according to nic.at, 40% of Austrian companies are not aware of the introduction of free registration of new gTLDs.

Also, according to a Nominet survey, 62% of companies are not going to register their own domain or any second-level domain in new zones. 22% of firms plan to register domains in new zones, but the main site of the company will remain in an existing domain. 2% of companies are going to leave the old zones and place the organization’s main site in the new gTLD.

However, for analysts, the survey results were mixed. 41% of companies do not know about new gTLDs, but almost 60% know, and this is a very high indicator - after all, on the Internet, this ICANN program is still discussed almost exclusively by IT specialists and organizations involved in intellectual property protection.

And although Nominet, like Nic.at, believes that the new gTLDs have not found a wide response from the public, the numbers indicate the opposite - more than 24% of companies are now potential customers of the owners of new domain zones, which in the future may also register their own gTLDs. According to analysts , this portends the great success of ICANN and the owners of the new gTLDs. And, although the statement “there are three types of lies: lies, blatant lies and statistics” is true, this forecast is likely to be true - for all the shortcomings of the new gTLDs and for all the many mistakes, scandals and missed deadlines, ICANN received 1930 applications for new gTLD. Even the most optimistic forecasts called much smaller numbers.
