Facebook begins construction of a second data center
Not so long ago, Facebook management announced its intention to switch to its own computing power by building its own data center. Today it became known that a second data center will soon be built, which will take on a significant part of the load. This data center will be located in North Carolina. By the way, this state is loved by many corporations that have their own data centers. The fact is that the climate here is relatively cool, which saves energy during operation of the cooling system - there is simply no need for “gluttonous” industrial air conditioners and other types of cooling systems. And there are practically no climatic disasters, such as hurricanes, (there are no earthquakes). And another plus is that this state has relatively low electricity tariffs,
The cost of building a new data center will cost the company $ 450 million, which is quite a lot even by the standards of such corporations. Geographically, this data center will be located 120 kilometers west of the city of Charlotte. By the way, the first data center is located in Oregon, it is also not ready yet, but it will start working at the beginning of next year. Immediately after putting it into operation, Facebook will refuse to lease the production capacities of third-party companies. It’s right - it is worthless for companies with billions of dollars to use third-party resources.
In principle, it’s understandable why this is happening - the company simply could not keep up with the growth in the number of users before, and no one expected that they would have to build their own data center. But, as we see, it was necessary, and not one, but two whole large data centers. No. 2 will be built for about a year and a half, and after the readiness of the data center, only about 50 people will work in it, including “contractors” and Facebook employees. Facebook thought about the need to create its own data center in North Carolina about a year ago, since then negotiations have been ongoing with the state leadership.
Now data centers of companies such as Apple, Google and IBM are already located here, so Facebook has quite interesting neighbors.
