How it was: Intel Summer School 2010 before the equator
So, Intel Summer School 2010 is coming to an end: on Monday-Tuesday, final reports on the work done; on Wednesday, a bypass sheet, delivery of equipment, and, upon exit, delivery of a magnetic pass. And then the locomotive with a touch of sadness will carry the trainees home. And only with time will it come to the realization that, in addition to experience, the main idea of the organizers of Intel schools worked: Strengthening / Combining / Teaching a community of students and young scientists. Indeed, the Penny Ruble Protects. It is possible that someone will come as an engineer at Intel, but many will continue their scientific / technical work in their educational institutions with a rethought worldview.
But back to the main topic of the post. After the equator of the Summer School, I asked interns and organizers to share their impressions of the first month at Intel. But the vacation took me by surprise, and I did not have time to format everything. Now the time has come, as they say: "Better late than never." Let me remind you that in the period of the first month, interns:
- interested persons - took part in the contest "Check your English";
- listened to 7 webinars;
- passed a number of local trainings;
- Novosibirsk visited the Center for High Performance Computing Competence SB RAS-Intel;
- Nizhny, Sarov, Peter and Moscow spent 2 days (July 30-31) in Nizhny Novgorod at a training workshop ( schedule ), Novosibirsk listened through LiveMeeting;
- after the seminar, Nizhny, Sarov, Peter and Moscow (August 1) went to get acquainted with the sights of Gorodets;
- who had time left, worked on their projects.
Maria Oseeva, Intel Summer School program manager:
“On behalf of the organizing team I want to say“ Ugh ... So far we have done well. Half way behind. ” No, it was not difficult, the main thing was to successfully start, and then "maintain breathing in the process of running." Not in vain did we think through all the details from the winter, entirely for each of the 5 offices separately.
As soon as we did not test students:
- for durability and endurance - for example, a 4-hour webinar on processor architecture could be removed without interruptions for the heading “Are you weak?”
- in accordance with the high rank of “promising scientific youth” - in the framework of a traditional seminar uniting summer schoolchildren of all generations, the interns presented the scientific research that they conduct in their native universities
- to get up early Saturday - to go on an excursion to the Novosibirsk Center for High Performance Computing Competence SB RAS-Intel
- for friendliness and sociability in a confined space - trainees from Nizhny, Sarov, Moscow and St. Petersburg successfully filled up the way for a bus tour to Gorodets and back with conversations
- on sports - the Novosibirsk people took part in the Greek Olympic Games (read on) and won (!)
And all this against the background of work in projects on clear and time-bound tasks.
Honor and respect to the participants of Intel Summer School 2010, who after all our experiments on them are healthy, cheerful, optimistic, want to work and even try to identify candidates for the title of the main workaholic.
By the way, this year we received an unscheduled assistant to strengthen the working capacity of our summer interns ... the weather. Oddly enough, the fire hazardous situation in Moscow, Nizhny and Sarov played into our hands. Outside the window there is no heat and smoke, there is nothing to breathe, visibility is low - but in the office there is coolness, cleaned air, and protective masks for those who still risk going out. Unexpected, but excellent motivation not to go, but to run to the office not only for summer students, but also for employees. That's how nature came to the protection of employers during the holidays and student vacations. ”
Dmitry Pavlov, Nizhny Novgorod office, Educational institution: Ivanovo State Energy University:
“I can’t even believe that a whole month has passed. How fast it all went. It would seem that only yesterday the Intel Summer School opened its doors and we were a little confused and happy to get acquainted with our new place of work for the next 2 months. Now, I think, they have become a little more confident, have gotten used to it, but the feeling of happiness and pleasure from work is still present and even becomes stronger day by day.
Time, indeed, flies rapidly. Assessing the past month, you understand how much we managed to do, how much to learn.
Firstly, they managed to attend a bunch of trainings, and personally I got as much knowledge as they don’t give for a semester (or even more) of studies at the university. Moreover, the lectures are selected so that you gain knowledge from different fields. How to write letters, the software development cycle, creative thinking, and much more. I would also like to mention the instructors for their professional approach to business. Each of them managed to interest the audience and excellently, and most importantly, to present their subject with interest. I recall the lively discussions, questions, discussions.
Secondly, in addition to working on the project, Intel offers many interesting contests. I managed to participate in almost everyone and even managed to win a T-shirt :).
Thirdly, a student workshop is especially worth noting. It was a great opportunity to talk with summer schoolchildren of past years, learn a lot of new things and present their developments. After such events, interest in his profession flares up with renewed vigor, this one as a charge of energy and new ideas. I also remembered the excursion to Gorodets at the end of the seminar. In addition to programming knowledge, he also refreshed his knowledge of history.
Separately, I note the department in which I work. This place is just a fairy tale. These are people who are great to work with, who have tremendous experience. In practice, I became convinced of the advantages of flexible development methodologies, learned the meaning of the magic words Agile, XP, Kanban.
My mentor was especially helpful in this. Without it, it would be painfully difficult to write the right line of code, follow the principles of Agile, and generally create a normal application architecture. I also note his talent for lecturing to students of the summer school. Each such lecture is a whole event that no one wants to miss.
And finally, the most important thing is the feeling with which you go to work. This is not even work, but passion, a hobby, something that gives great pleasure. Communication with interesting people - with specialists who already today determine the future of the IT industry and work with the most modern tools and methodologies.
PS And just recently opened a sports ground. I look forward to a football match between students and employees. ”
Julia Shatilina, Novosibirsk office, Educational institution: Altai State Technical University named after I.I.Polzunova :
“From the very first day I was struck by the atmosphere in the company: it’s very quiet, calm, and most importantly, everyone is so friendly around. Somehow from the first day we were well received and treated very carefully. The director of our summer school, Nikolai, is very attentive and always ready to help and answer any question, starting with the organization of the school, living, leisure, and ending with highly specialized questions about the specifics of working on projects. I also really like my mentor, it’s very interesting to work with him, a very smart and interesting person, an interesting task. Despite the fact that the first weeks of school there was once no time to work on the task, I still managed to find time, and I think I’ll finish even ahead of schedule. Seminars and webinars are always very interesting. The workshops are very lively, storytellers from Intel (and not only) are fluent in the art of presentation (which we are going to teach us by the way tomorrow), and the material is always interesting, modern and necessary. Webinars, of course, are also good, but I’m still getting used to them, because they usually go quite a long time. The team at the summer school we got very colorful and interesting, but we still made great friends and had a great rest in our free time. I would also like to note that we took part in the celebration of the anniversary of the site, and we with a group of enthusiasts joined the organizing committee and helped prepare for the holiday, which was also quite interesting. The holiday was in the format of the Greek Olympic Games, everyone was in the “toga”, there were a lot of original and funny contests. modern and needed. It should be noted that the prizes for winning
Everyone is happy and happy. And I am very glad that I got to this school! Thanks, Intel, for a great summer! ”
Igor Shalyminov, Moscow office:
“Interesting, challenging tasks; a sea of knowledge and experience; a friendly and vibrant team is all for me Intel Summer School 2010.
To be honest, I didn’t even imagine that the summer internship program could be so rich: in addition to directly working on the task, a couple of dozen trainings and webinars, contests for programming and knowledge of English and even a trip to another city!
They go to any summer school for knowledge and experience, but not everyone can get as much as the Intel Summer School gives. Webinars provided new knowledge for schoolchildren: over the past month, reports were read on almost everything - from the basics of creative thinking to the intricacies of multithreaded applications and improving the security of their code. Moreover, it was possible to learn something new at absolutely every webinar: even if at first there was a feeling that all this was already known from the university program, at the end of each webinar it turned out that much remained to be studied in this area.
Speaking of experience, I mean not only the application of knowledge to the solution of the task. Intel has a completely different experience with Intel (I will probably call it that). When you contact a person from Costa Rica by telephone over the course of one business day, you receive a mailing list from China for dinner, and in the evening you join a video conference with America - this is experience at Intel. Working in a team that is not limited by the framework of one office, city, or even country is great!
"
Evgeny Shevchenko, St. Petersburg website (office), Educational institution: Southern Federal University (Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics):
" I especially want to highlight the trip from St. Petersburg to Nizhny Novgorod, acquaintance with the Novgorod website and the organizers of the summer school.
It was pretty impressive to plunge into the work of Intel's main office. Two working days and one day off in the form of an excursion to Gorodets left a lot of impressions. Thank you first of all to the organizers.
A special impression was made by our native St. Petersburg site, its responsive and friendly team. Here we are working on a study in the field of gesture recognition under the guidance of our mentor and a very good person Andrei Belogolov
”
Andrei Maslennikov, engineer-practitioner of the Media SDK project, director of the Intel Summer School 2010 in the Sarov office (part-time student of NRNU SarFTI MEPhI):
"I am a director. It's already been a month. Still funny. In general, I like the post - it sounds. And at the same time, not so much is required of me. Well, except that I met the guys showed the dining room. He also knocked out (not without Masha, of course) for them a separate computer for conducting trainings. He was doing something else, probably. He even attended part of the trainings. It’s hard not to see the narrator, but if the topic is interesting ... And I’m glad: I got to the Summer School. Well, not a schoolboy, so what? I like it anyway. ”
Victor Getmansky, Nizhny Novgorod website, Volgograd, VolgSTU:
“It's nice to know that for almost a month now you have been an employee of Intel. Many events took place, including a seminar by Intel summer schoolchildren, at which interesting people gathered to talk about their scientific work. In addition to training and events from Intel, we visited a bunch of interesting places. Work in a summer school goes well with relaxation, so there is no time to be bored here and there is always something to do. For several weeks, as part of the team, I worked on my task and I am glad that we managed to fulfill the first part of the plan. We made a program that needs to be parallelized. Now the fun began - the use of parallel technologies in practice. I think that the remaining time at Intel’s summer school will be just as productive, and now it’s a pity that time flies so fast. ”
Olga Zoteeva, Nizhny Novgorod website, Samara, SSAU:
“For me personally, this time passed quickly, like a month has passed, but it seems like one day. There was a lot of everything, work, rest, a hostel, conversations in the kitchen and on the balcony ... Trainings are a separate topic, on the one hand they interfere with work, on the other - you can hear a lot of useful and interesting things. Of course, the seminar of schoolchildren and the subsequent trip to Gorodets was remembered, if you do not pay attention to smoke. Nizhny Novgorod, if this is your case every summer, I sincerely sympathize!
“So many impressions that you can’t describe everything, so I apologize for being crumpled.”
Danil Skachkov, Novosibirsk site:
"Hello! So half of the Intel Summer School 2010 has passed. During this seemingly short period of time, there have been many interesting and wonderful events that began with a wonderful Cake.
To begin with, as part of the Intel Summer School, we listened to a large number of interesting webinars and trainings, at which we got acquainted with the latest trends in Intel processor technologies, as well as with the fundamental foundations of the art of optimization. There is a lot (if not all) of speed devoted to Intel. The fastest processor, The most optimizing compiler, The fastest library for engineering computing, The fastest development of the Fastest applications and. etc. The words "Fastest" can rightfully be considered the slogan of the company.
Also, electronic trainings were held on corporate culture, anti-corruption, protection of personal information. All this is necessary to introduce students to the internal atmosphere of the company (very favorable), its internal order and attitude towards employees.
Of course, in between classes, we did not forget about our projects! (
There was a free minute for visiting the Center for High Performance Computing Competence SB RAS-Intel, where I finally found out what kind of tasks require such enormous computing power. And even, as it turned out, the existing teraflops are still not enough for some modeling tasks. And of course, we were shown a real “living” cluster, which, by no means, could not help but be photographed.
The celebration of the
also successful at the presentation of Oracle products at the Technopark Summer School in Novosibirsk Akademgorodok, where the presentation, which began very officially at the beginning, turned into in friendly gatherings with contests and songs with the guitar.
In general, the past weeks of the School flew for us in a fun and relaxed way! Thanks to all the organizers and participants! »
Dmitry Maryin, Intel Nizhny Novgorod Office, School: Ufa State Aviation Technical University:
“A month has gone by at Intel, and everything is still interesting and new around. I have never met such a properly organized company in my opinion. This month we have made great progress in the implementation of our project, working in collaboration with specialists, studied many technologies and put them into practice. A seminar of summer schoolchildren of both this and previous years was held, at which they met interesting people and their scientific activities in their universities. Also, many interesting lectures, seminars, and trainings were held on various topics on which company employees shared their knowledge and experience. As for the latter, I would like to mention it separately - here you can calmly turn to a specialist with a question and he will answer you. ”
Ilya Kryukov Nizhny Novgorod website, Educational institution: Nizhny Novgorod State Technical University named after R.E. Alekseeva:
“A month has passed in the global company Intel! During this time, many interesting webinars and trainings have been listened to - a sea of useful information that can be obtained only here. From the first days I liked the office, but the place doesn’t color the person, but the person is the place, so I want to note that the highest level specialists work with us, devoted to their work and ready to share their experience with the young generation.
Most of all I remember the last event - Intel Student Seminar, which was held within the walls of the Nizhny Novgorod office of Intel. The guys from other sites came to visit us - Moscow, St. Petersburg and the summer schoolchildren of the past, there were also participants from Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk, they joined us by conference call. Everyone made reports on their scientific work and who does what. I with my supervisor Olga Khvostova (a summer schoolgirl of 2007) talked about the topic of our research. I met with the guys, showed them the sights of the city. We will definitely continue to communicate further, and even cooperate with some (hello Shamakina Nastya)!
Intel is a great place to work, study and research! ”
And lastly, a few group photos:
Evgeny Migunov, Moscow site:
“First of all, I want to say that at the Summer School it is very interesting to work with real projects, to see their interaction and the result of their work. Also, what was new and very pleasant was the comfortable atmosphere in the team. Within a month, I managed to communicate with many interesting people. Quite often, webinars are held, from which you take out useful knowledge. It was exciting to go to the Summer School seminar in Nizhny Novgorod, meet other “schoolchildren”, see another city, and also meet your birthday on the train.
The most difficult thing in the Summer School is getting used to new terminology, both in the work environment and just in communication. ”
