DIY Stereoscopic viewfinder to 3D camera, from almost improvised means ...

Hello dear% Username%. I hasten to share with you the joy of my DIY work yesterday ... I feel that I now, at five minutes, have Cameroon for a long time, and I created a binocular viewfinder yesterday, which I hasten to share with you ...

This fancy device makes it possible to observe three-dimensional image from the cameras connected to it, which, in turn, is necessary in order not to see the roulette wheel, but to personally see the scene being shot, and align it relative to the plane of the screen, as well as visually assess the parallelism of the optical axes of the cameras or convergence yu (if I need it for some reason.)

This creation was inspired by the Soviet “Stereo 70” movie cameras, when at one stereo cinema seminar I happened to try it with a special lens with an adjustable base and a binocular viewfinder, I literally fell in love with this thing.
It seems to be a simple thing, but how convenient it is, in comparison with the bad tradition during stereo shooting, you can use all sorts of dual monitors with a translucent mirror for monitoring, you can use them to set cameras in a stereo rig, but this gives a very distant idea of the depth of effect in a real movie theater , so the depth tables for the modern stereo consultant have become something like the holy Quran.
For a long time I wanted to assemble a set of equipment for stereo shooting, so that I could practice it with plenty, because the production of stereo cinema is in many ways different from the usual representations of the director of photography. There are many questions, both compositional and psychological, because this is no longer a flat picture, but a piece of living space, and the screen plane dividing it has tremendous psychological significance. For example, shooting dialogs with the “eight”, we can place this plane between the interlocutors, or behind the listener's shoulder, it doesn’t matter on the plane, in stereo it affects the viewer's perception of the dialogue, like the size of a plan in a flat movie ...
In general, forgive me the respected% Username%, the confusion of presentation, for my brain is in full swing from the opening opportunities, although I still have a lot to do in this direction.
Would you be interested to read about it? I made a stereo viewfinder from two ordinary viewfinders from Sony camcorders, despite the difference in appearance, they are exactly the same inside. From them there is four contact loop: + 5V, Earth, Video, LED.

On the electronic side, everything seems to be simple. But it was not at all easy, it turned out, to fix this whole economy, so that when a video signal was supplied to both handsets, the picture was reduced and turned out to be in the plane of the screen. The fact is that because of all manufacturing tolerances, the screens are not quite perpendicular to the plane of the viewfinder body, and they differ in the size of the case. Plus, I’m not at all adept at sculpting, and naively thought that it would be enough to blind the guide gasket between the tubes, a naive idiot, I waited twenty minutes to freeze the polymorphus, holding the tubes with my hands, and looking to see if the picture had gone wrong. From time to time I called on my wife to turn on a time-out video camera that showed me a tuning table, and all in vain ...

As a result, it dawned on me that you first need to wrap the tubes with polymorphus and allow it to harden, and only then, heating the corresponding sides with a soldering hair dryer, put it on the base blank, install the partition, and only then reduce this matter when the polymorphus has cooled down. Having achieved a clear picture in the plane of the screen, I carefully disconnected the wires, and set to cool in the refrigerator and lo and behold, everything worked out!

Having connected two cameras and “looking out the window” with an enlarged basis, I realized that I’m not a bit sorry for money not for Kodak soap dishes, not for polymorphus, and I don’t feel sorry for the disassembled cameras, although in truth I expected a higher viewfinder from their viewfinders permissions ...
