Terabyte SSDs the size of a postage stamp will appear in the near future

imageSSD drives have not yet achieved great popularity in the market, but a team of Japanese researchers is already improving their usability. They claim that they are already developing technology that will reduce the size of their drives by no less than 90%, make them cheaper and increase their energy efficiency by 70%.

The research team consists of people from several different institutions, including Toshiba and Keyo University in Tokyo, which is led by a fairly well-known professor Tadahiro Kuroda.

The new technology will make it possible to manufacture terabyte SSD drives that will be the size of a small postage stamp. The current prototype (pictured) is equipped with a 128 NAND memory chip and one controller chip. It boasts an information transfer rate of 2 gigabits per second.
Practical samples are expected in 2012.
