Hub users outwitted themselves

Last night I published a post on Habré , in which it was proposed to conduct a psychological game-poll. As promised, today I am summarizing the results of this survey.

The rules of the game, formulated directly on the site:
“In this game you need to choose two arbitrary numbers from 0 to 9 so that these numbers get the least amount of penalty points. These points are accumulated quite simply - each player, choosing a number, adds a penalty point to her. That is, in other words, you need to determine which numbers will be chosen by the players least often and indicate them in your answer. Naturally, you won’t know what numbers the other players have chosen, until the very end of the game and the debriefing. At first glance, the game is pure luck. But this is not entirely true, there is another point of the rules, which I have not yet voiced. The fact is that each figure initially has a certain amount of penalty points - “1” has 10, “2” has 20, ..., “9” has 90. At “0” there are no penalty points at the beginning.

And this is precisely this point that makes the game intriguing. On the one hand, it’s most logical to choose “0” and “1”, because at the beginning they have the least penalty points, which means they are the winning numbers. But so many will judge. These two numbers will be chosen, and it will be they who will rapidly gain penalty points. So in the course of the game they will get ahead of both “2” and “3”. Is it so? Your task is to predict the behavior of the crowd and its mood, to determine which numbers will not be popular. Good luck to the participants. ”

So, the results. Yes, indeed, the user users outwitted themselves. Exactly 100 responses were received, but only 94 were accepted for accounting due to the available explicit replays from the same user.

As stated in the rules, it was most logical to choose “0” and “1”. They should have been chosen most often. Do you think this is what happened? By no means, quite the contrary, these two numbers were chosen least often (I do not take into account "8" and "9", these numbers initially had no chance at all)! As a result, “9” was chosen 7 times, “8” - 9 times, but “0” and “1” - 14 and 16, respectively. Taking into account the initial penalty points, we get the following picture:
    “0” 14 points (14 times selected)
    “1” 26 points (16 times)
    “2” 36 points (16 times)
    “3” 56 points (26 times)
    “4” 77 points (37 times)
    "5" 69 points (19 times)
    "6" 76 points (16 times)
    "7" 92 points (22 times)
    "8" 89 points (9 times)
    "9" 97 points (7 times)
Most often, “3” and “4” were chosen. Khabravchians did not even believe in the "deuce."
Even if we take into account a certain confusion in the statement of the rules and the conduct of the survey, the conclusions are clear. It seems that there would be more votes - the gap would be even greater.
Now all answers are open on the site , you can familiarize yourself with the results of the survey.
