Wikiproject Overview

At present, the technology of “wiki” is actively developing in the Russian-language Internet, which consists in the fact that each visitor can edit the content of the site, put forward his suggestions for the development of articles, and determine the content of the pages by consensus with other editors, while special privileges in managing the site have administrators, but usually they must obey the rules of the site. If once Wikipedia was one of some well-known projects, now there are a large number of both universal and highly specialized projects covering issues of various topics.

In this article, we present you an overview of the most famous Russian-language wiki projects:

    Wikimedia Foundation Projects

The most famous projects of the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation - in particular, he owns the well-known giant Internet encyclopedia "Wikipedia" and a number of other smaller resources supplementing it. The main projects of the Fund are multilingual, almost all of them contain sections in Russian, and they are based on the famous MediaWiki engine. So, they include:

    Wikipedia (Russian)

    ru.wikipedia.org

A free encyclopedia that anyone can edit. The project has quite strict rules for writing articles, in particular, the need to specify verified sources and ensuring licensed purity of content. Currently, the Russian section contains ~ 450,000 articles on various topics, of which 872 received the status of good, and 315 - the status of favorites. New articles are being actively developed, new articles are being written and are being finalized, the project is in the wikipedia stage. The system of marking versions as verified has been implemented, the reader can choose whether to read the latest version of the article or the checked one (if any). At the same time, Russian Wikipedia is criticized for its peculiar atmosphere and places of draconian order, as well as for a significant lag behind a number of other sections, the largest of which is English-speaking with more than 3 million.

    Wikisource (Russian)

    ru.wikisource.org

The Foundation’s second most developed project is a library of texts not protected by copyright. To date, the database of the Russian part contains more than 67,000 texts. Participants who are also familiar with Wikipedia are actively developing the project, filling in the Brockhaus and Efron Encyclopedic Dictionary (ESBE), which has become a classic, is being filled with bots (programs for automating edits), and numerous other free works are placed, including various texts of laws. As in Wikipedia, there is a system for marking individual versions of articles as verified.

    Wikimedia Commons

    commons.wikimedia.org

A large collection of free media files that can be used in all other projects of the Foundation, as well as in any wiki projects with the latest versions of the MediaWiki engine. The site has more than 5 million images, everyone can upload files to Wikimedia Commons after registration (the only limitation is that these files must be free, and their description is properly designed). These files are allowed to use, distribute and modify freely.

    Other projects

So far, Russian-language projects that have not received proper development are (Russian) Wikinews (a free news agency, now developed mainly by anonymous and some volunteers), the Russian Wiktionary (in its essence a dictionary of Russian words and phrases), the Russian Wikiquote (collection of quotes in Russian) , Russian Wikibooks (a collection of diverse Russian-language literature for training, after the expulsion of one of the founders of Ramir from there, it hardly develops).

    Alternative Russian-language wiki projects

    Universal:

    Annals.Ru

    letopisi.ru A

wiki project that positions itself as an encyclopedia for schoolchildren, designed for them to master wiki technology. Contains a significant number of articles, a fair amount of which was created to test the capabilities of the wiki. The project collaborates with Wikipedia.

    Tradition

    traditio.ru

The main alternative to the Russian-language Wikipedia is a wiki project that has a pronounced nationalistic bias due to the policies of its founders - one of the leaders of modern Russian nationalism, writer, philosopher and blogger Konstantin Krylov and his journalist associate Sergei Nesterovich. Particular emphasis in the project is placed on Russian nationalism and related entities, but at the same time there is also a lot of natural-scientific, reference material and general topics. It contains a number of articles copied from the Russian Wikipedia, including many articles deleted from there. In addition to encyclopedic articles, the project has a lot of copyright materials, mainly of a nationalist orientation. Currently, the project contains approximately 22 thousand articles, that is, 20 times less than in Russian Wikipedia, and yet it is one of the few Russian-speaking competitors.

    ENE

    wiki.laser.ru A

free scientific encyclopedia created and supported mainly by the efforts of one person - the famous Wikipedist and Wiki dissident Evgen2. Most of the articles are information transferred from the old encyclopedias: ESBE, the Little Soviet Encyclopedia, etc., the Wikisource Wiki site, as well as articles and personal articles deleted from Wikipedia written by Evgen2.

    Knowledge

    wikiznanie.ru

Wikipedia, which was once a real competitor to Russian Wikipedia, is now in deep stagnation and practically does not develop. Nevertheless, it contains a significant number of articles, mainly filled in with ESBE and has a decent attendance, representing a source for advertising revenue for its owners.

    Specialized:

    Lurkomorye

    lurkmore.ru

The Encyclopedia of the Internet, written in the spirit of nihilism and postmodernism, contains articles about famous memes, cases that have occurred on the Web and other similar information. Most of the articles are completed, there are almost no blank articles, and they are quickly removed. The project materials contain in some places witty, sometimes evil satire and criticism of almost all other Russian-language wiki projects, various phenomena and Internet figures, and are very popular in RuNet, often cited. The site adopted the use of special vocabulary, including profanity, the excessive use of which, however, they try to prevent and remove from the articles.

    Wikimapia

    wikimapia.org

Perhaps the most successful wiki project of Russian origin. It is a multilingual description of various geographical features on Google Maps. Made on a special engine. It has huge popularity and attendance, in it more than 10 million descriptions. Founded by Alexander Koryakin and Evgeny Savelyev. It is not clear how Wikimapia has not yet been bought by large corporations.

    Rodovod (Russian section)

    ru.rodovid.org

A collection of genealogical descriptions based on the Mediaaviki engine with a special add-on. It allows you to build beautiful family trees of yours or others and is actively developing.

    Anti-copyright

    anticopyright.ru A

site created in support of the “anti-copyright” movement to abolish the basic provisions of modern copyright law. Most of the articles talk about copyright and the movement to fight for its liberalization, there are articles about important figures and projects of the wikisource, censorship, interesting lawsuits, etc. Project materials express the authors' position of the site owners, including well-known Wikipedists among the administrators. Supervised by the patriarch of Runet Misha Verbitsky.

    Dispensaries

    provizorii.ru

This is an example of a highly specialized wiki encyclopedia created to describe everything related to philately and mail. The founder and main author of the project is the famous philatelist researcher, Wikipedist and Wiki dissident Anatoly Serebryakov (Serebr). It contains his own research on the modern history of the Russian postal service and the so-called "pharmacies", as well as a significant number of materials related to philately copied from other encyclopedias (mainly from Wikipedia). In total, the project has more than 2000 articles.

    Wikireality

    wikireality.ru

A young developing site dedicated to a detailed description of the wikis environment, mainly its Russian-language part. A review of the main Russian-language wiki projects, and the most famous multilingual wiki sites. A special place is given to an alternative description of the history of Russian Wikipedia. In some places it contains criticism in the spirit of Lurkomorye, which in general is still more neutral and "academic." The subject of the site is limited only to the wikis environment (in the future, a smooth expansion of the topic and a description of the entire Web 2.0 are planned). In addition to encyclopedic articles, studies of Wikipedists are published, including “wiki-conspiracy theology”, well-known sayings, documentation of the MediaWiki engine, and autonomous projects. The creators of the site are anonymous, most likely - these are wiki-dissidents expelled from the Russian Wikipedia.

Any comments and suggestions are welcome.

The authors of the review Benjamin Linus (linus@wikireality.ru, so far without an account on Habré) is one of the founders of Wikireality, and Anatoly Serebryakov ( Serebr ) is the founder of Provizoriev.
