OpenSolaris 2009.06 Release

    June 1, the International Children's Day, has arrived. But I think this is not interesting for us. For one unit, Sun Microsystems planned two events: the beginning of the CommunityOne West conference and the official release of the next Solaris-based open system release - OpenSolaris 2009.06 .

    Owners of an already installed system can be updated using the command pkg image-update, everyone else can download the iso image of the installation disk .



    Desktop:
    • FireFox has been updated to version 3.1 beta 3.
    • Simplified work with TimeSlider. Added integration with the Nautilus file manager for convenient file recovery.
    • Added support for Codeina allowing you to pump out audio and video codecs. Also added media center Elisa.
    • Added TimeTracker - a program that allows you to make plans.
    • Updated PackageManager. Improved overall performance, added the ability to add SSL protected repositories via the GUI, added support for installing from the web in one click (1-Click web install).

    Development Tools:
    • Juicer, a web-based automatic package building service, was launched to help porting software.
    • Visual Panels - administration panels: SMF Services, Apache, Date & Time, Coreadm.
    • Added Dtrace probes for PHP, MySQL.
    • Added JavaFX SDK support for the first time.
    • Git version control system added to the repository.

    Networking:
    • Many improvements to the ClearView project.
    • Added support for Crossbow - a platform for network virtualization.
    • Added iSCSI support for COMSTAR.
    • Many improvements to the CIFS service, including IP access restriction, ACL, caching.

    Hardware Support:
    • For the first time, official support for the SPARC platform has been added.
    • Added a lot of drivers.
    • Added full support for Intel's new processor family, code-named Nehalem (Xeon 5500).
