Self-marketing - “Portfolio” of a programmer

I am a programmer, mainly engaged in the web; in the best projects in this regard, I did neither design nor layout.

Do you think it makes sense for a web programmer to create a “portfolio” in addition to a standard resume? And how can it be done so that you can appreciate the contribution of a web developer?

Any interesting examples?
