Wiki Search: Almost RIP
The Wikia Search search service , created by the Wikimedia Foundation, is being closed. The original idea, in which users could influence the output of results, simply failed at the box office. Over the past half year Wikia Search “attracted” only 10 thousand unique users per month.
Wikimedia creator Jimmy Wales commented on Wikia Search's shutdown: “Traffic to hell.” In order to reach an acceptable level, we need another year or two. So now we cannot afford to support the project. We [here Wales clearly included an “optimist”] will return to work on the project when the economic situation improves. ”
In part, Wikia Search has funded the Google SearchWiki, launched in November 2008, which also allows users to influence search results.
