Good news, everyone: The $ 10,000 Toonz source code will be open to everyone.
The tool with which Futurama was created will become publicly available on March 26th
Today it became known that the Japanese publisher Dwango is buying the Italian company Digital Video. This company is a software developer for creating Toonz 2D animations. Accordingly, all rights to the package belong to the Italians. Under the terms of the agreement, Dwango after the purchase opens the Toonz source code.
The tool itself is proprietary, used (and used) in Studio Ghibli and Rough Draft Studios. The same software package was used during the creation of the animated series Futurama, the animated work Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away. Access to the package will be available to everyone on March 26th. The source code will be free to download and change.
It is worth noting that the price of the package so far was $ 10,000. After the software itself becomes free, the new owner plans to receive money for the provision of services for installing and configuring the package, training employees in various companies, as well as for technical support.
The Dwango initiative is not unique. Somewhat earlier , Pixar announced its intention to open the code for its software product Universal Scene Description (USD) . This product will be available to all this summer (the exact date is still unknown).
