One manufacturer - different fates: external HDD LaCie P'9220 1 TB and Rugged Triple 2 TB

In the modern world, where you have to travel a lot, work in different parts of the world, or simply simply change equipment in a short time, it would be wise to always have all the necessary personal information with you. It is convenient when the information is nearby, and the device that stores it is absolutely reliable and at the same time compact. And most importantly, that the selected gadget does not differ by a small reserve of memory, because the multimedia information array is growing as fast as shopping centers in large cities. There are, of course, solutions for flexible data storage, and they are quite diverse. Welcome to the iCover Blog . Today we will talk about the most popular storage method - external HDDs, this time from Lacie company: protected LaCie Rugged Triple on 2TB and beautifulPorsche Design P'9230 on 1TB .

We can say that in recent years, cloud storage systems have been actively developing. But, for a number of circumstances, they are not always convenient and acceptable for continuous operation, and you have to pay extra for the allocated additional space. Yes, and still remains dependent on the Internet connection. As practice shows, the best option is an external hard drive. These devices are mainly used for storing a home or work library. There are a lot of variations on the market, from the simplest models to luxury or “tricked out” additional functionality. Well, the amount of information that can be accommodated in portable devices over the years only grow. Judging by the name, as you can already guess, consider and test we will model LaCie P'9220 Porsche Design,

But before starting, I would like to ask a question: is the reader and our average customer familiar with LaCie (read like La C)? It should be noted that devices of this brand were not often presented on the shelves of domestic stores. The company was born in the United States, in Oregon, where it got its name, which has survived to this day. It was officially founded in 1987. Two years later, in 1989, a second company was founded in Paris, which is inextricably linked with La Cé, électronique d2. Both companies from the very beginning of the opening were guided by the market of storage systems. In 1995, the management of électronique d2 decided to completely redeem La Ci, and in 1998 to take the name LaCie as an international brand. Although references to d2 are still found in the products of this company.

Since the inception of the company, its main idea has not changed - it is primarily the creation, development and promotion of products for the professional and industrial sphere. Over time, a course was chosen for the private professional-premium segment. Well-known designers were involved in the work, including Porsche Design to develop the original appearance of the devices. And in recent years, the company has been actively collaborating with Seagate, which in 2014 acquired Lacie and is integrating its structure into its own composition. By the way, it was thanks to the électronique d2 company that almost twenty years ago a large-scale output of products on the North American market became possible, and not vice versa. However, despite all the difficulties that the company had to overcome, it survived to our time,

    Kits

The richest set of delivery of the two applicants for the test, perhaps, LaCie Rugged - there is a USB 3.0 cable, FireWire 800 and documentation.

In the box of Porsche Design, in addition to the hard drive itself, there was only a USB 3.0 cable and printed products.

    Appearance and functional features

But the design of the model is not at all alike. Let's start with the Porsche Design version. This model is essentially one solid metal rectangular block in size slightly larger than the most standard 2.5-inch HDD installed inside. The metal is somewhat rough, the texture clearly resembles rough grinding of aluminum. At two ends there are slightly protruding plastic inserts. On one of them there is a name, and on the other there is a USB 3.0 output.

On the front side in the left corner there is an inscription in black Porsche Design, and in the lower corner there is a slot around the entire perimeter where the LED indication is white. Therefore, it is possible to determine whether a hard disk works without putting an ear to it, as with the first one not only in sound and light vibration, as in the second disk in our material today. There are no catchy and spoiling marking labels on the device. I want to note only the weight of the device - it is 260 grams, sharp corners, they really can cause bodily cuts by negligence. The overall dimensions of the device, by the way, are as follows - 77 x 130 x 18 mm. Otherwise, I would like to evaluate the appearance and workmanship on a solid five. There were no flaws in the assembly. I also emphasize that the drive is quite quiet and does not heat up after prolonged use.

The manufacturer promised a data transfer rate of up to 5 GB / s - when connected via USB 3.0. When using a device with less efficient USB 2.0, the promised speed values are more modest - only up to 480 MB / s. Convenient software for backup and HDD control is also supplied with the disk. I note that the drive worked without problems with both OS X and Windows 7/8 without any problems, however, the manufacturer stated this on the packaging in the section on supporting the device with operating systems. Unfortunately, it was not possible to parse and see which exact hard drive model was installed in the proposed device.

But the rugged slang disassembled turned out, or rather remove the protective silicone case. Indeed, unlike the stylish external HDD Porsche Design, this model is less beautiful, but more protected from external influences. According to the manufacturer, the model is shockproof and can withstand drops of up to two meters in the off state. In the included, as in the majority, the chances of losing a job are 50 to 50.

The device itself cannot be called compact, its dimensions are 90 x 28 x 145 mm, but the weight is identical to the weight of the previous model - 260 grams. The main body of the device is metal. Partially on top, namely at the edges, it is covered with a silicone case, which, if necessary, will suppress impact energy, as well as vibration and noise in everyday use. All in all, I can't call Rugged noisy. Yes, if you attach it to your ear, then in working condition you will hear the HDD installed inside the case, as well as vibrations, but if you put it on the table and move literally 10 centimeters away, then, in fact, you will not see signs of work. In this regard, unlike a beautiful brother, he really lacks an LED indicator.

Depending on the selected amount of memory, LaCie Rugged is equipped with one 2.5-inch hard disk format 7,200 or 5,400 RPM. At the same time, the manufacturer gives the nominal speed parameters of the interface: when connected via USB 3.0 - up to 5 GB / s, and when using the FireWire 800 connector - 800 MB / s. Also, the disk can be encrypted using the 256-bit AES algorithm. Of course, OS X, Windows, and Linux support both hard drives to the fullest.

It’s difficult to summarize the design of the protector of your information LaCie Rugged. Outwardly, it does not stand out against the background of most similar shockproof solutions. It is bright, made very high quality. There are no complaints about the assembly. Good materials were used in the manufacture, and the design was developed by renowned designer Neil Poulton. I will say this, on the desktop, the device looks harmonious and attractive. Do not forget about the main purpose of the destination, which is practical, it is not a design object for a computer workstation.

When analyzing the inspection of external indicators and listing the features of a particular device, I would like to demonstrate several screenshots of the connected device to the computer, as well as the interface of the software manufacturer with its small functionality, and several tests in CrystalMark.

Screenshots of tests, carefully, the original

    Porsche Design:

    Rugged:

Overall performance impressions are good. I draw your attention to the fact that for the device to be fully operational, you can do without branded software. In fact, the device is completely ready for everyday use right out of the box.

    conclusions

Performing one common task of saving user files, buy Rugged Triple and Porsche Designmost likely there will be different people. I did not notice a strong difference in performance, the package bundle will clearly not affect the choice. As for the amount of memory, all two disks are available in versions of 500 gigabytes and 1 or 2 terabytes. The first one will serve not only as a convenient device for storing files, but also as a stylish accessory with a famous name on the case. And the second one simply will not give your data an abyss in case of any emergency situation, and a bright external one will be positively evaluated by the user. With regard to pricing, LaCie does not produce very budget devices - most often these are storage systems that are used by professionals as tools for work. So this time, the devices are clearly aiming at a segment above the average cost, for example, the average price for LaCie P'9220 Porsche Design with a volume of 1 TB varies from 6 to 8 thousand rubles, and for Rugged with a volume of 2 TB, prices exceed the line of 10 thousand rubles. What about reliability? For a sufficiently long period of the company's stay in the market, there have been no cases of spoiling the reputation, as well as any mass reviews of breakdowns or possible “glitches” of the devices in question.
